Rhabdomyolysis associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteremia in a splenectomized patient.

Invasive infection due to Streptococcus pneumoniae associated with rhabdomyolysis is rare. We report the case of a 31-year-old splenectomized man with pneumococcal bacteremia and paranasal sinusitis who presented with flu-like symptoms preceding a fulminant course of sepsis and rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure and elevated creatinine phosphokinase. Although the possible mechanisms of rhabodomyolysis associated with pneumococcal infection remain unclear, this report may serve to alert clinicians of the need to prevent fulminant pneumococcal infection by vaccination and treatment with antibiotic prophylaxis in splenectomized patients.

Cloning and functional expression of the mucrosobin protein, a beta-fibrinogenase of Trimeresurus mucrosquamatus (Taiwan Habu).

A venom-specific cDNA encoding for a thrombin-like enzyme designated as mucrosobin has been cloned and sequenced from the cDNA library of the venomous gland of Trimeresurus mucrosquamatus. The full-length cDNA of mucrosobin was assembled by oligonucleotide screening and 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends. The amino acid sequence deduced from the cDNA consists of 257 amino acid residues with a putative signal peptide of 24 residues.

Two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis of Aedes aegypti mosquito fat body proteins during a gonotropic cycle.

We have used two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to examine changes in the relative abundance and diversity of non-secreted proteins in Aedes aegypti fat body preparations during a reproductive cycle. Electrophoretic profiles were evaluated at four time points after eclosion, and at five time points after a blood meal. In contrast to the dramatic changes in abundance of specific secreted proteins such as vitellogenin, our results show that the complement of proteins internal to the fat body remains relatively constant during the mosquito reproductive cycle.

One-stage correction of neglected developmental dysplasia of the hip by open reduction and pemberton osteotomy.

Background And Purpose: Pemberton osteotomy is commonly used for correction of hip-dysplasia. Its application in treating hip dislocation is rarely reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of one-stage open reduction and Pemberton osteotomy of neglected developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).

Increased ribonucleotide reductase activity in hydroxyurea-resistant mosquito cells.

Hydroxyurea-resistant Aedes albopictus mosquito cells were selected by incremental exposure of unmutagenized cells to hydroxyurea concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 8 mM. Clonal populations that had become 40-fold more resistant to hydroxyurea than wild-type cells varied in morphology, and their growth rate decreased to a;45 h doubling time, relative to an 18 h doubling time in unselected cells.

An increase in circulating non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) has been observed in patients with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. To investigate whether fatty acids will affect the endothelin-1 (ET-1) receptor and thus contribute to the acceleration of atherosclerosis in diabetic patients, cultured rat aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC) were maintained in media containing higher (similar to those in diabetic patients) concentrations of oleic acid (OA) or linoleic acid (LA). Previously, we reported that insulin-stimulated glucose uptake (ISGU) can be inhibited by endothelin (ET-1). However, the mechanism by which ET-1 impairs ISGU in adipocytes remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of ET-1 on insulin action in rat adipocytes in order to elucidate the molecular mechanism of action of ET-1 on ISGU.

Enhancement of liposome-mediated gene transfer to human airway epithelial cells by replication-deficient adenovirus.

We hypothesized that replication-deficient adenovirus (Ad), when complexed with plasmid DNA (pl) and cationic liposomes (L), would enhance liposome-mediated gene transfer in cultured human airway epithelial cells. Pl/L/Ad complexes were formed using charge-charge interactions. A gel electrophoresis retardation assay showed plasmid DNA to be associated with the virus in a high-molecular-weight, low-mobility complex, the diameter of which was 300 to 350 nm.

Spinal cord injury within the first few hours, is complicated by inflammatory mechanisms, including the influx of monocyte/macrophages as well as the activation of resident spinal microglia and astrocytes. Numerous studies have suggested that the initial infiltration of the hematogenous cells may be due to the secretion of cytokines and chemokines in the injured CNS. In order to elucidate which chemotactic factors may be expressed following traumatic spinal cord contusion, the presence of mRNA for a number of cytokines, chemokines and growth factors was examined in contused rat spinal cord by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry.

Receptor-mediated endocytosis as a selection force to enrich bacteria expressing rhodostomin on their surface.

Previously, we developed a TraT display system to express snake venom rhodostomin (RHO), a disintegrin, on the external surface of Escherichia coli [J Biomed Sci 6:64-70;1999]. To show a new potential use of the TraT display system, we employed a biotin labeling technique coupled with SDS-PAGE and flow cytometry analyses to further demonstrate and confirm the expression of TraT-RHO on the E. coli surface.

Lack of effect of simvastatin on insulin sensitivity in Type 2 diabetic patients with hypercholesterolaemia: results from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study.

Aims: To evaluate the effects of simvastatin on serum lipids and insulin sensitivity in Type 2 diabetic patients with hypercholesterolaemia.

Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled and two-period crossover study. After a 2-month run-in, 19 eligible Type 2 diabetic patients with hypercholesterolaemia were randomized to receive either simvastatin or placebo for 3 months, exchanging their treatment thereafter for another 3 months.

Octreotide effect on hypersecretion of growth hormone in a patient with fibrous dysplasia: a case report.

We report the case of a 17-year-old adolescent boy with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH). The fasting serum GH, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), alkaline phosphatase activity and osteocalcin levels were all elevated. The GH secretion was stimulated by thyrotropin-releasing hormone and was not suppressed by an oral glucose test.

Clinical response and patient acceptance of a prefilled, disposable insulin pen injector for insulin-treated diabetes.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical response and patient acceptance of a prefilled, disposable insulin pen injector (Novolet, Novo-Nordisk, Bagsvaerd, Denmark) for treating insulin-dependent diabetic patients.

Methods: After a run-in period of six weeks, 19 patients participated in an open, randomized, controlled, crossover study with two 12-week periods using insulin pens or conventional syringes.
