Background: Stromal fibrosis is highly associated with therapeutic resistance and poor survival in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. Low expression of plasma gelsolin (pGSN), a serum abundant protein, has been found to correlate with inflammation and fibrosis. Here, we evaluated pGSN expression in patients with different stages of cancer and therapeutic responses, and delineated the molecular mechanisms involved to gain insight into therapeutic strategies for ESCC.

Clinical trials using AAV-mediated gene delivery to accessible tissues have led to successful treatments for numerous monogenic disorders and advancements in tissue engineering. Although the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved AAV for clinical use, systemic administration remains a significant challenge.

Desmethylclomipramine (DCMI), a bioactive metabolite of clomipramine, shows the therapeutic efficacy with antidepressive agency as well as potential cytostatic effects on lung cancer cells. Here, we demonstrated that DCMI effectively caused transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-mediated mesenchymal type of A549 cells to undergo mitochondrial death via myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1) suppression and activation of truncated Bid (tBid).

Areas of bony prominences, such as the scapula, sacrum, and heels, are more likely to develop pressure injuries. The management of pressure injury wounds include dressing changes, repositioning, away from moisture, decreasing the occurrence of friction and shear, and more.

Accurate interpretation and classification of genetic variants in LQTS patients are crucial for effective management. All patients with LQTS with a positive genetic test over the past 18 years (2002-2020) in our single tertiary pediatric cardiac center were identified.

This study aimed to understand the public reaction to the 2015 dengue outbreak in Taiwan by determining the key influencing factors. A total of 1104 respondents aged 18 years and over, were recruited by telephone between November 20 and 28, 2015, to investigate fear, risk perception, and psychological distress during the dengue outbreak. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that fear of dengue was more prevalent in the areas that were most affected, as well as those with infected friends or relatives.

The synthetic route features several notable aspects: (a) the starting material, compound 13, contains a built-in hydroxy group and was transformed to the Sonogashira reaction precursor; (b) the construction of the indole ring was achieved through a transition-metal catalyzed synthesis and a 5- cyclization. The desired indole 9 was synthesized in only 7 steps with an overall yield of 54% and required only three columns; (c) a late C2-bromination was achieved by using the 4-acetoxyindole analogue 14c.

The interaction between VPA and CBPs can lead to a rapid depletion of serum VPA level. This may then cause status epilepticus (SE), which is associated with significant mortality.

The main purpose of this study is to explore the application of the balanced scorecard (BSC) to service performance measurements of medical institutions using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and decision making and trial evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL). According to the concept of BSC, a total of four evaluation dimensions and twenty-two indicators of medical service performance measurements were developed. To collect data, this study delivered expert questionnaires to medical-related professional supervisors, deans, and heads of medical institutions in Taiwan.

To respond to patients' increasing demands and strengthen nursing professionals' capabilities, nursing students are expected to develop problem-solving skills before they enter the workforce. Problem-based learning (PBL) is expected to provide effective simulation scenarios and realistic clinical conditions to help students achieve those learning goals. This article aims to explore the effects of PBL strategies on nursing students' self-evaluation of core competencies.
