Verrucous xanthoma is a rare benign muco-cutaneous lesion, whereas oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease relatively common in the clinical setting. Verrucous xanthoma and oral lichen planus can reportedly coexist according to foreign literature. Owing to the low incidence of verrucous xanthoma and the rarity of co-occurrence of these two diseases, the mechanism underlying the co-occurrence of the two diseases remains inconclusive.

BACKGROUND The restoration of damaged periodontium, especially one-wall intrabony defects, is a major challenge for clinicians. Concentrated growth factors (CGF) are a 100% autologous fibrin with multiple concentrated growth factors. The rigid fibrin structure of CGF makes it possible to preserve or reconstruct the initial bone volume.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of cyclic stretch that promotesthe osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) through the mediation of extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2).

Methods: hPDLCs were isolated through the explant method and cultured in vitro. hPDLCs were mechanically stimulated by a multi-channel cell-stress-loading system for 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h.

Objective: To study the function of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) on apoptosis of oral mucosal epithelial cells and to provide a basis for further investigation of the role of KGF in the occurrence and development of oral mucosal diseases.

Methods: Different concentrations of KGF (control group, 0 ng x mL(-1); experiment 1 group, 5 ng x mL(-1); experimental 2 group, 25 ng x mL(-1); experiment 3 group, 50 ng x mL(-1)) were added in oral mucosa epithelial cells cultured in vitro. After training for 12, 24, and 48 h, cell morphology was observed under an inverted microscope.

To explore the role of the IL-23/IL-17 axis in the relationship between periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CHD), 97 subjects were recruited and divided into four groups: (1) CHD + periodontitis, (2) CHD, (3) periodontitus alone, and (4) healthy. The demographic characteristics and periodontal status of all subjects were recorded, and the serum levels of IL-23/IL-17 were detected by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay. Results showed that the serum levels of IL-23/IL-17 in groups 1, 2, and 3 were higher compared with group 4.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can differentiate into mineralizing cells and thus have a great potential in application in engineered bone substitutes with bioactive scaffolds in regeneration medicine. In the current study we characterized and demonstrated the pluripotency and osteogenic differentiation of mouse iPSCs. To enhance the osteogenic differentiation of iPSCs, we then transduced the iPSCs with the potent transcription factor, nuclear matrix protein SATB2.
