Isolated bacteria from infections in general surgery during the period from April 2001 to March 2002 were investigated in a multicenter study in Japan, and the following results were obtained. In this series, four hundred and twenty strains were isolated from 175 (79.2%) of 221 patients with surgical infections.

A questionnaire survey on postoperative infection prophylaxis was conducted to achieve the consensus on the perioperative antimicrobial use among otolaryngologists in Japan during the period of time from April to July 2000. Fifty-two out of 84 otolaryngologists replied, and the following consensus was obtained. An antimicrobial prophylaxis (AMP) agent should be chosen based on their efficacy against the pathogens expected to be contaminants, such as Staphylococcus spp.

Tendency of isolated bacteria from infections in general surgery and their antimicrobial susceptibilities during the period from April 2000 to March 2001 were investigated in a multicenter study in Japan, and the following results were obtained. The number of cases investigated as objectives was 234 for one year. A total of 388 strains (136 strains from primary infections and 252 strains from postoperative infections) were isolated from 165 cases (70.

The annual multicenter studies on isolated bacteria from infections in general surgery and their antimicrobial susceptibility have been conducted in Japan since July 1982. In this paper, the results obtained in the academic year 1999 (from April 1999 to March 2000) have been summarized. Two hundred seven cases were investigated, and 411 strains were isolated from 169 cases (81.

A questionnaire survey on the theory of postoperative infection prophylaxis was conducted to obtain the consensus on perioperative antimicrobial use among urologists in Japan in the period from April to July 2000. Sixty-three of the 87 urologists replied, and the following consensus was obtained. An antimicrobial prophylaxis (AMP) agent should be chosen based on their efficacy against the pathogens expected to be contaminants, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp.

Background: We have previously reported that by means of a breath test with intravenously administered L-[1-13C] phenylalanine (13Cphe), hepatopathy could be quantitatively evaluated by measuring expiratory 13CO2 levels in a short period. It is known that phenylalanine hydroxylase activity (PAHA) plays an important role in phenylalanine metabolism. We examined the relationship between changes in PAHA and the results of the 13Cphe breath test during hepatic regeneration in a rat model of 70% hepatectomy, to assess their usefulness for evaluating hepatic regeneration.

Using checkerboard and time-kill assays, the in-vitro activity of ciprofloxacin alone and in combination with flomoxef against clinical Bacteroides fragilis strains was evaluated. In addition, the microbiological efficacy of this combination was compared with that of ciprofloxacin plus clindamycin. In 88% of the 25 strains tested, the combination of ciprofloxacin plus flomoxef exhibited a synergistic or an additive effect, whereas only 56% of the 25 strains ( P< 0.

A pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor derived from the adrenal medulla (or from chromaffin cells of sympathetic ganglia). Its symptoms derive mostly from the excessive release of catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline). Hypertension is the most recognized feature of this disease, but gastrointestinal manifestations can on rare occasions be just as serious and life threatening.

We evaluated the utility of in-situ hybridization (ISH) for the rapid diagnosis of sepsis. We applied this approach to polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN)-rich smears from patients with suspected bacterial infection. Positive results by ISH were obtained in the smears of 123 of 292 patients (42%), while only 32 of the 292 (11%) were positive by blood culture.
