Article Synopsis
  • Mass screening for thyroid cancer isn't currently recommended, but targeted screening for high-risk groups, like those with familial nonmedullary thyroid carcinoma (FNMTC), is encouraged.
  • A study of 149 asymptomatic family members from 53 FNMTC families revealed that over half had thyroid nodules, and 10.1% were diagnosed with thyroid cancer after surgery.
  • The detected cancers predominantly included papillary thyroid cancer, with a significant rate of metastases, suggesting that ultrasonographic screening could be crucial for early detection in these high-risk individuals.

First-degree relatives of persons with thyroid cancer are known to be at relatively high risk for the disease. To better understand the clinicopathologic characteristics of familial nonmedullary thyroid carcinoma (FNMTC), we carried out a retrospective study in which we identified individuals treated at our institution who had at least one first-degree relative with the disease. We used data obtained from our patient records to compare the features of 258 cases of the disease with the features of sporadic papillary or follicular thyroid carcinoma in another group of patients.
