Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on 1,167 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to identify predictors of treatment refractoriness for intermediate-stage HCC, particularly against locoregional therapies like TACE and surgical options.* -
  • Key factors contributing to treatment refractoriness included the Child-Pugh score, number of tumors, infiltrative radiological type, and recurrence, with recurrences leading to significantly shorter median times to untreatable progression.* -
  • The research highlighted that patients with multiple recurrences showed decreased time to treatment failure, suggesting the need for early multidisciplinary interventions for HCC patients experiencing several recurrence episodes.*

Colorectal cancer (CRC) can occasionally coexist with diverticulitis, thereby complicating diagnosis and treatment. In cases of refractory diverticulitis, it is important to consider the possibility of malignancy and determine appropriate treatment strategies. Background: Although surgery is the definitive curative treatment for biliary tract cancer (BTC), outcomes after surgery alone have not been satisfactory. Adjuvant therapy with S-1 may improve survival in patients with BTC. This study examined the safety and efficacy of 1 year adjuvant S-1 therapy for BTC in a multi-institutional trial.

We present our experience using a novel method for controlling the transection plane, which we termed as the Harness Traction Technique (HARNESS) and evaluate its usefulness. From May 2009 to March 2012, laparoscopic hepatectomies using HARNESS were performed on 35 patients. After the superficial hepatic parenchyma on the line was transected at 1 to 2 cm depth, 5 mm tape was placed along the groove of the line and tied to prevent it from slipping off.

Restriction landmark genomic scanning (RLGS) was utilized to identify novel genomic alterations in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thirty-one HCC samples were examined by RLGS. Two high intensity spots were common to several RLGS profiles of different HCCs.

Introduction: The precise intraoperative localization of insulinoma is essential for successful surgical management.

Aims: To assess the usefulness of measuring insulin levels by preoperative percutaneous transhepatic portal catheterization (PTPC) and intraoperative ultrasonography (US).

Methodology: PTPC and other preoperative procedures (enhanced computed tomography [CT], arteriography, and US) were performed in eight patients with insulinoma based on our experience during the past 18 years.
