Floating spine after pedicle subtraction osteotomy for post-traumatic kyphosis.

Purpose: Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) was developed to achieve significant correction of a deformity. It was initially used to correct sagittal plane deformities associated with ankylosing spondylitis, but recently it has also been performed in patients with post-traumatic kyphosis. Our aim was to report a case of a floating spine after PSO for post-traumatic kyphosis.

The incidence and risk factors for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma after peginterferon plus ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C.

Background/aims: Although the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been shown to be reduced after pegylated glycol-interferon plus ribavirin (Peg-IFN/RBV) therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C, the risk factors for the development of HCC are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to clarify the incidence and the risk factors for the development of HCC after Peg-IFN/RBV therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Methodology: A total of 474 patients with chronic hepatitis C who received Peg-IFN/RBV therapy between December 2004 and August 2010 were enrolled and followed in a multicenter trial.

A case of podocytic infolding glomerulopathy with multiple myeloma.

Background: Podocytic infolding glomerulopathy (PIG) is a recently described condition causing rare pathological changes to the glomeruli, and has attracted considerable attention. PIG is characterized by specific changes to the thickened glomerular basement membrane (GBM), including microspheres, microtubular structures, and podocytic infolding. Only a small number of cases of PIG have been reported.

Long-term course of Dravet syndrome: a study from an epilepsy center in Japan.

Objective: This study attempted to clarify the long-term course of Dravet syndrome (DS).

Methods: Sixty-four patients diagnosed with DS (44 with typical DS, and 20 with atypical DS) were studied. The long-term outcomes of clinical seizures, electroencephalographic findings, neuropsychological findings, and social situation were analyzed.

Structural characterization of the mechanosensitive channel candidate MCA2 from Arabidopsis thaliana.

Mechanosensing in plants is thought to be governed by sensory complexes containing a Ca²⁺-permeable, mechanosensitive channel. The plasma membrane protein MCA1 and its paralog MCA2 from Arabidopsis thaliana are involved in mechanical stress-induced Ca²⁺ influx and are thus considered as candidates for such channels or their regulators. Both MCA1 and MCA2 were functionally expressed in Sf9 cells using a baculovirus system in order to elucidate their molecular natures.

Accumulation of metal-specific T cells in inflamed skin in a novel murine model of chromium-induced allergic contact dermatitis.

Chromium (Cr) causes delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions possibly mediated by accumulating T cells into allergic inflamed skin, which are called irritants or allergic contact dermatitis. However, accumulating T cells during development of metal allergy are poorly characterized because a suitable animal model is not available. This study aimed to elucidate the skewing of T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire and cytokine profiles in accumulated T cells in inflamed skin during elucidation of Cr allergy.

Structure-activity relationship of a series of 17 parabens and related compounds for histamine release in rat peritoneal mast cells and skin allergic reaction in guinea pigs.

Parabens, which are a homologous series of esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, have been used as preservatives in cosmetics, medicines and foods because of their antimicrobial activity. However, parabens in cosmetics have been suspected to cause allergic contact dermatitis. In this study, we examined paraben-induced histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells and skin reaction in guinea pigs using a series of 17 parabens with different alcohol side chains, ranging from methylparaben to dodecylparaben.

Identification of the internal carotid artery at the superior part of the cavernous sinus during endoscopic endonasal cavernous sinus tumor surgery.

Background: Identification of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is essential for successful endoscopic endonasal cavernous sinus tumor surgery. This study aimed to develop a method for identifying the ICA in cavernous sinus tumors at the superior part of the cavernous sinus.

Methods: Ten fresh cadavers were studied with a 4-mm 0° and 30° endoscope to identify surgical landmarks of the ICA in the cavernous sinus.

Endoscopic endonasal approach to the middle cranial fossa through the cavernous sinus triangles: anatomical considerations.

The lateral limit of endoscopic endonasal surgery has yet to be defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the lateral limit of endoscopic endonasal surgery at the level of the sphenoid sinus. Access from the sphenoid sinus to the middle cranial fossa through the cavernous sinus triangles was evaluated by cadaver dissection.

Revision surgery after cervical laminoplasty: report of five cases and literature review.

Background Context: Revision surgery after laminoplasty is rarely performed, and there are few reports of this procedure in the English literature.

Purpose: To evaluate the reasons why patients underwent revision surgery after laminoplasty and to discuss methods of preventing the need for revision surgery. A literature review with a comparative analysis between previous reports and present cases was also performed.

Verification of measurements of lumbar spinal dimensions in T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging sequences.

Background Context: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to assess patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. No single MRI sequence has been shown to be superior in spinal canal measurements. There are also cost concerns for the increased clinical and research use of MRI.

Characterization of T cell receptors of Th1 cells infiltrating inflamed skin of a novel murine model of palladium-induced metal allergy.

Metal allergy is categorized as a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction, and is characterized by the recruitment of lymphocytes into sites of allergic inflammation. Because of the unavailability of suitable animal models for metal allergy, the role of T cells in the pathogenesis of metal allergy has not been explored. Thus, we developed a novel mouse model for metal allergy associated with infiltration of T cells by multiple injections of palladium (Pd) plus lipopolysaccharide into the footpad.

Using DNA-driven assembled phospholipid nanodiscs as a scaffold for gold nanoparticle patterning.

Recently, a new class of materials emerged with the assembly of DNA-coated phospholipid nanodiscs into columnar BioNanoStacks. Within these stacks, lipid discs are periodically incorporated, resulting into quasi-one-dimensional superstructures. With each disc surrounded by two recombinant scaffolding proteins, we decided to examine whether the polyhistidine tags of these proteins could be utilized to bind additional molecules or particles to these BioNanoStacks.

Nickel (Ni) can cause delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions, which are thought to be mediated by the accumulation of T cells into inflamed skin. Accumulated T cells at the developmental stages in metal allergy are poorly characterized because a suitable animal model has not been established. To investigate the accumulated T cells in allergic inflamed skin, we generated a novel murine model of Ni-induced allergy.

[Efficacy of repeated adrenocorticotropic hormone therapy in patients with intractable epileptic spasms].

Objective: We examined the effectiveness of repeated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) therapy in short-term and long-term seizure control in patients with intractable epileptic spasms.

Methods: Twenty-five patients with intractable spasms, in whom epileptic seizures were not controlled or relapsed after the first ACTH therapy, were given repeated ACTH therapy. The short-term effect (seizure control longer than two months) of repeated ACTH therapy was analyzed, and the long-term effect was estimated by Kaplan-Meier method.

Endovascular stent graft repair for thoracic aortic aneurysms: the history and the present in Japan.

Stent-grafts for endovascular repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms have been commercially available for more than ten years in the West, whereas, in Japan, a manufactured stent-graft was not approved for the use until March 2008. Nevertheless, endovascular thoracic intervention began to be performed in Japan in the early 1990s, with homemade devices used in most cases. Many researchers have continued to develop their homemade devices.

Stent-graft implantation for clinically diagnosed syphilitic aortic aneurysm in an HIV-infected patient.

We describe our experience with stent-graft placement in a patient with a clinically diagnosed syphilitic aortic aneurysm.The patient was a 43-year-old man with syphilitic and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an aortic aneurysm with 89 mm in maximum size which was located at distal aortic arch and was considered syphilis derived saccular aneurysm.

Role of FDG-PET/CT in evaluating surgical outcomes of operable breast cancer--usefulness for malignant grade of triple-negative breast cancer.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) for speculating the malignant level and prognostic value of operable breast cancers.

Methods: Of 578 consecutive patients with primary invasive breast cancer who underwent curative surgery between 2005 and 2010, 311 patients (53.8%) who received FDG-PET/CT before initial therapy were examined.

Noise models and cryo-EM drift correction with a direct-electron camera.

Blurring due to specimen-holder drift is a common occurrence in cryo-EM images. Cameras employing active-pixel sensors are capable of high frame rates such that a single low-dose exposure can be acquired as a series of frames. In this paper we consider the possibility of tracking and compensating for overall drift in typical single-particle specimens through the analysis of frame sequences.

Substrate-specific structural rearrangements of human Dicer.

Dicer has a central role in RNA-interference pathways by cleaving double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) to produce small regulatory RNAs. Human Dicer can process long double-stranded and hairpin precursor RNAs to yield short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), respectively. Previous studies have shown that pre-miRNAs are cleaved more rapidly than pre-siRNAs in vitro and are the predominant natural Dicer substrates.
