A prospective 10-year follow-up study after sublobar resection for ground-glass opacity-dominant lung cancer.

This single-arm multi-institutional prospective study aimed to evaluate the 10-year outcomes of sublobar resection for small-sized ground-glass opacity-dominant lung cancer. Among 73 patients prospectively enrolled from 13 institutions between November 2006 and April 2012, 53 ground-glass opacity-dominant lung cancer patients underwent sublobar resection with wedge resection as the first choice. The inclusion criteria were maximum tumor size of 8-20 mm; ≥ 80% ground-glass opacity ratio on high-resolution computed tomography; lower F-fluorodeoxyglucose accumulation than the mediastinum; intraoperative pathological diagnosis of adenocarcinoma in situ; and no cancer cells on intraoperative cut margins.

Prognostic impact of plasma volume status during hospital admission in patients with acute decompensated heart failure.

Aims: Plasma volume status (PVS), a measure of plasma volume, has been evaluated as a prognostic marker for chronic heart failure. Although the prognostic value of PVS has been reported, its significance in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) admitted to the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU) remains unclear. In this study, we examined the relationship between PVS and long-term mortality in patients with ADHF admitted to the CICU.

Changes in fractional exhaled nitric oxide, forced expiratory volume in one second, and forced oscillation technique parameters over three years in adults with bronchial asthma managed under Yokohama Seibu Hospital's coordinated care system.

Background: In western Yokohama, our hospital and primary care clinics manage adults with asthma via a coordinated care system. We investigated the changes in the fractional expired nitric oxide (FeNO), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV), and forced oscillation technique (FOT) parameters over 3 years in a cohort of patients in our collaborative system.

Methods: From 288 adults with well controlled asthma managed under the Yokohama Seibu Hospital coordinated care system between January 2009 and May 2018, we selected 99 subjects to undergo spirometry, FeNO and FOT testing over 3 years and analyzed the changes in these parameters.

Medical Students' Knowledge, Attitudes Toward, and Identification of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma-Informed Care.

Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic experiences that occur prior to age 18 years and can have a long-term impact on adult physical and mental health. Knowledge of ACEs, including the link between ACEs and health, and trauma-informed care (TIC), is essential for medical professionals to ensure respectful and compassionate care for those with a history of childhood adversity. This study examined medical students' knowledge, attitudes toward, and identification of ACEs and TIC to inform curricular efforts.

Midterm results of endoscopically assisted first rib resection in the zero position for thoracic outlet syndrome.

Objectives: We have hypothesized that an endoscopically assisted transaxillary approach in the zero position would be able to improve visualization and allow safe surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.

Methods: We performed surgery only for patients with certain objective findings, including blood flow disruption, low blood flow and accelerated blood flow in the subclavian artery demonstrated using Doppler sonography, narrowing of the scalene interval width between the anterior and middle interscalene muscles (interscalene base) or costoclavicular space demonstrated using Duplex ultrasonography or computed tomography angiography. The present study included 45 consecutive patients (50 limbs) who underwent endoscopic transaxillary first rib resection with scalenotomy and brachial plexus neurolysis.

The Effect of Elbow and Forearm Position on the Resisted Wrist Extension Test and Incidence of Sensory Disturbance of the Superficial Radial Nerve in Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis.

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of elbow and forearm position on the resisted wrist extension test (RWET) in patients with lateral epicondylitis. We also looked at the incidence of associated sensory disturbance of the superficial radial nerve (SRN) and the effect of treatment of lateral epicondylitis on sensory disturbance. Sixty-three consecutive patients (68 limbs) with lateral epicondylitis and an equal number of age and gender matched volunteers were investigated.

A case of acute myocardial infarction due to coronary artery compression by mediastinal hematoma associated with thoracic aortic aneurysm rupture.

A 76-year-old woman was admitted to our department for pneumonia. Although she gradually recovered, she complained of chest and back pain and went into shock. Electrocardiogram showed ST-segment elevation in the inferior leads; thus, an acute inferior myocardial infarction (MI) was strongly suspected.

Forefoot Deformities in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Mid- to Long-Term Result of Joint-Preserving Surgery in Comparison with Resection Arthroplasty.

Background: Joint-preserving surgery for the forefoot has been increasingly performed for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We compared joint-preserving surgeries with resection arthroplasty for RA in the forefoot.

Methods: Forefoot surgeries were performed on 62 toes in 42 patients with RA (men: 2; women: 40) between 2002 and 2018.

Assessment of the severity of curly toe.

Background: Curly/underlapping toe involves flexion, adduction, and varus deformity of the interphalangeal joints. There are no previous reports showing the relationship between physical examination and X-ray findings among patients with curly toe deformity.

Methods: We investigated the clinical findings of 116 consecutive patients associated with 239 underlapping toes.

Unsuccessful Intervention of CT-Assisted Osteosynthesis for Stress Fractures of the Hook of the Hamate: A Report of 3 Cases.

Case: We performed computed tomography (CT)-assisted dorsal approach osteosynthesis for stress fractures of the hook of the hamate using the dorsal approach in 3 high school baseball players in the hybrid operating room. Bony union was observed in all patients on CT. All patients were able to play baseball without pain for at least 6 months after surgery.

[The Significance of Surgical Biopsy in Case of the Resistance to Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors for the Treatment of Postoperative Recurrence of Lung Cancer].

To evaluate the clinical features of patients who developed resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) administered for postoperative recurrence of lung cancer, we assessed eight patients who underwent surgical biopsy or sampling for the detection of T790M mutation under general anesthesia from 2017 to 2019 in our hospital. All 8 patients had undergone lobectomy with nodal dissection for lung cancer of pathological stageⅠB/Ⅲ/Ⅳa (4/3/1 patients). The median disease-free survival was 29 months (range:11~110 months).

Usefulness of a target sample check illuminator in the detection of target specimens in endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy samples: Multicenter prospective study.

Objectives: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) uses a thin needle, rendering unclear whether the collected sample contains pathological evidence. We examined the usefulness of our target sample check illuminator (TSCI) through a multicenter prospective trial.

Methods: We included 52 consecutive patients.

Strategy for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis of the elbow using denervation surgery.

Background: A number of treatments for lateral epicondylitis of the elbow have been described. We have developed a strategy for the treatment of this condition.

Methods: We diagnosed lateral epicondylitis of the elbow in 86 patients.

A 64-year-old woman with complete atrioventricular block caused by sarcoidosis was emergently placed a pacemaker. A 10 mm nodule in the left upper lobe of the lung and the mediastinal and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy was detected through chest computed tomography. To establish the diagnosis, resection of the tumor and #4L was performed.

Comparison of Coronary Culprit Lesion Morphology Determined by Optical Coherence Tomography and Relation to Outcomes in Patients Diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome During Winter -vs- Other Seasons.

Patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) during winter have worse outcomes; however, mechanisms driving this trend are unclear. We examined coronary culprit lesion morphologies using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Features and outcomes were retrospectively compared between patients admitted with ACS in winter (W-ACS; n = 390) and in other seasons (O-ACS; n = 1,027).

A prospective 5-year follow-up study after limited resection for lung cancer with ground-glass opacity.

Objectives: The incidence of small-sized pulmonary adenocarcinomas with ground-glass opacity (GGO) has recently increased, with excellent postoperative prognosis. The limited resection of such cancers has been deemed to be acceptable based on retrospective studies. We conducted a prospective multi-institutional study evaluating the validity of limited resection for small-sized pulmonary adenocarcinoma with GGO.

Chronic phase improvements in electrocardiographic and echocardiographic manifestations of left ventricular hypertrophy after alcohol septal ablation for drug-refractory hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

After alcohol septal ablation (ASA), regression of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been observed in several studies using echocardiography or cardiac magnetic resonance, and favorable changes of myocardial excitation have been expected. However, no studies have focused on the alteration of electrocardiography (ECG) findings after ASA. Therefore, we evaluated serial changes in ECG parameters during the chronic phase after ASA for drug-refractory hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM).

The Incidence of Atypical Femoral Fractures in Patients with Rheumatic Disease: Yamagata Prefectural Committee of Atypical Femoral Fractures (YamaCAFe) Study.

Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) have been reported to occur with minimal or spontaneous subtrochanteric and femoral shaft fractures with a characteristic transverse pattern, compared with typical femoral fractures in young patients with high-energy trauma. AFFs are related to long-term use of bisphosphonates (BPs), glucocorticoids and rheumatic diseases. We have estimated a blind analysis of AFFs in rheumatic patients receiving BPs and glucocorticoids ordinary over a long time in all Yamagata prefectural area through radiographic examination.
