Subjects And Method: One hundred fifty-one patients with PDR who underwent surgery were divided into groups based on either the presence or absence of iris and/or angle NV (NV group, 37; non-NV group, 114 patients). Pulse oximetry was conducted overnight and the heart rates were measured both before and during sleep; the resting and nocturnal heart rates and the resting-nocturnal heart rate dip ratio were calculated.
Aim: To clarify whether the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) independently contributes to the development of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) compared with carotid arteriosclerosis parameters and other risk factors.
Methods: Eighty-eight consecutive patients with exudative AMD were enrolled. A control group (40 age-matched men, 65 years of age or older) was also evaluated, and the parameters were compared between the two groups.

Background: To evaluate the vitreous fluid levels of soluble LR11 (sLR11), a novel circulating marker for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), in patients with PDR and non-PDR (NPDR) in comparison to those in patients with non-diabetic ocular diseases.
Method: Twenty NPDR and 60 PDR cases were included. Twenty-four subjects with a macular hole were served as a control group.
The alternative oxidase is a membrane-bound ubiquinol oxidase found in the majority of plants as well as many fungi and protists, including pathogenic organisms such as Trypanosoma brucei. It catalyzes a cyanide- and antimycin-A-resistant oxidation of ubiquinol and the reduction of oxygen to water, short-circuiting the mitochondrial electron-transport chain prior to proton translocation by complexes III and IV, thereby dramatically reducing ATP formation. In plants, it plays a key role in cellular metabolism, thermogenesis, and energy homeostasis and is generally considered to be a major stress-induced protein.

Neurological injuries are widely known to promote neurogenesis in the adult hippocampal dentate gyrus. Our previous studies demonstrated that the granule cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus are injured and eradicated by treatment with trimethyltin (TMT), with being regenerated in the dentate granule cell layer (GCL) after neuronal loss. Recent collective reports indicate that during brain injury and in neurodegenerative disorders, neurogenesis is controlled by cytokines, chemokines, neurotransmitters, and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, which are released by dying neurons as well as by activated macrophages, micro-glia, and astrocytes.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and dopamine depletion in the striatum. Although the motor symptoms are still regarded as the main problem, non-motor symptoms in PD also markedly impair the quality of life. Several non-motor symptoms, such as sleep disturbances and depression, are suggested to be implicated in the alteration in circadian clock function.
