Background: Kidney transplant is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease. Early detection of allograft injury is important to delay or prevent irreversible damage.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of hyperpolarized (HP) [1-C]pyruvate MRI for assessing kidney allograft metabolism.

Introduction: BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) continues to impact renal transplant recipients (RTR). The New England BK Consortium aims to jointly optimize screening and management of BKPyV.

Methods: Our first project was to survey centers' BKPyV screening protocols and compare them to consensus guidelines.

Objective: Data on the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease (AD) and Parkinson disease (PD), in patients with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) are lacking.

Methods: A total of 4,229 patients who were aged ≥20 years and had received a diagnosis of PKD were included in the PKD cohort. For each PKD case identified, 1 participant aged ≥20 years without a history of PKD, dementia, or PD was selected from the comparison cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer is extremely deadly, with high diagnosis and mortality rates in the U.S., where most cases are advanced by the time of detection; however, cutaneous metastases are rare, especially outside the umbilical area.
  • A unique case of a 76-year-old woman is presented, who developed cutaneous metastases from pancreatic adenocarcinoma in her surgical wound after undergoing a kidney transplant, marking the first report of such a case post-transplant.
  • The increasing cancer mortality rate in older transplant recipients highlights the need for proactive screening and evaluation for suspicious conditions to improve cancer outcomes.

Objectives: Although the number of patients awaiting renal transplant is rapidly increasing, the donor pool has remained relatively stable. Horseshoe kidneys, a common renal fusion anomaly, can provide a useful solution to the ever increasing gap between supply and demand.

Materials And Methods: These kidneys can be transplanted, en bloc, into a single recipient or divided and transplanted into 2 recipients.

Inflammatory cytokines induce erythropoietin (EPO) resistance, anorexia, and suppression of hepatic albumin synthesis. Increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) have been associated with relative EPO resistance in dialysis patients. More recently, studies have shown that statin therapy decreases CRP.

Background: Survival in patients with infective endocarditis (IE) ranges from 4 to 50% depending on the type of organism, the type of valve involvement and the type of treatment.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data in hemodialysis (HD) patients at our center from 1990 to 2000. Demographics, risk factors, and outcome data were extracted in the subgroup of patients with first-episode IE diagnosed primarily by echocardiography.

Tunneled dialysis catheter-associated right atrial thrombus (RAT) is a rarely reported complication. We reviewed hospital records of 10 patients from a teaching hospital dialysis unit, in whom RAT was diagnosed by trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE). Patients were treated with chronic anticoagulation (heparin followed by warfarin) and followed over time.
