The detection of heavy metals in soil is of great scientific significance for food security and human health. However, traditional detection methods are complicated, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. Herein, we developed a novel method using Au@SiO nanoparticles (NPs) and surface microstructure combined with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (Au@SiO NPs-SMS-LIBS) for the rapid detection of lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) in soil samples.

Ferroptosis is a classic type of programmed cell death characterized by iron dependence, which is closely associated with many diseases such as cancer, intestinal ischemic diseases, and nervous system diseases. Transferrin (Tf) is responsible for ferric-ion delivery owing to its natural Fe binding ability and plays a crucial role in ferroptosis. However, Tf is not considered as a classic druggable target for ferroptosis-associated diseases since systemic perturbation of Tf would dramatically disrupt blood iron homeostasis.

Excessive emissions of heavy metals not only cause environmental pollution but also pose a direct threat to human health. Therefore, rapid and accurate detection of heavy metals in the environment is of great significance. Herein, we propose a method based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with filter paper modified with bovine serum albumin-protected gold nanoclusters (LIBS-FP-AuNCs) for the rapid and sensitive detection of Cr and Mn.

Drought, as a primary environmental factor, imposes significant constraints on developmental processes and productivity of plants. PHDs were identified as stress-responsive genes in a wide range of eukaryotes. However, the regulatory mechanisms governing PHD genes in maize under abiotic stress conditions are still largely unknown and require further investigation.

The detection of heavy metals in tea infusions is important because of the potential health risks associated with their consumption. Existing highly sensitive detection methods pose challenges because they are complicated and time-consuming. In this study, we developed an innovative and simple method using Ag nanoparticles-modified resin (AgNPs-MR) for pre-enrichment prior to laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the simultaneous analysis of Cr (III), Cu (II), and Pb (II) in tea infusions.

Background: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a crucial neuromodulation therapy for depression, yet its molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here, we aim to unveil the underlying mechanisms of antidepression by systematically evaluating the change of gene expression in different brain regions (i.e.

The control of flowering time in maize is crucial for reproductive success and yield, and it can be influenced by environmental stresses. Using the approaches of Ac/Ds transposon and transposable element amplicon sequencing techniques, we identified a Ds insertion mutant in the ZmPRR37 gene. The Ds insertion showed a significant correlation with days to anthesis.

The rapid and sensitive detection of heavy metal ions is important for environment and human health. Hence, the rapid and sensitive detection of multiple heavy metals simultaneously has become a critical issue. Here, we propose a method based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with filter paper modified with PtAg bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) (LIBS-FP-PtAgBNPs) for the ultrasensitive detection of Hg, Cr, and Pb.

Background: Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) is a specific soft tissue sarcoma with a high recurrence rate. The short isoform of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 2 (TRPM2-S) plays an important role in the regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the association between TRPM2-S and RPLS and its underlying mechanisms remains unclear.

Laser opto-ultrasonic dual (LOUD) detection, which uses laser irradiation of samples to generate spectral and ultrasonic signals simultaneously, can perform multimodal detection of element composition and structural property. As such, it has been applied to the detection of additive manufacturing (AM) components. Further, optimized parameters lead to better detection results.

Metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) is a disruptive technique with great potential across multiple industries; however, its manufacturing quality is unstable, leading to an urgent requirement for component properties detection. The distribution of grain size has an important effect on many mechanical properties in AM, while the distribution of added elements, such as titanium (Ti), has a measurable effect on the grain size of an aluminum (Al) alloy. Therefore, the detection of the distributions of grain size and elements is of great significance for AM.

The detection sensitivity of chlorine (Cl) and sulfur (S) elements is poor using direct laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) because of the high ionization energy of Cl and S. Therefore, a new technique, namely indirect laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (ID-LIBS), was proposed to improve the detection sensitivity of Cl and S elements. The method detected Cl in water by indirectly detecting the excess silver (Ag) after the precipitation reaction of Ag and chloride.

The matrix effect is one of the main bottlenecks for the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. In this work, image-assisted, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (IA-LIBS) based on the Lomakin-Scherbe formula was put forward as a correction to the matrix effect. The brightness and area information in the plasma image was extracted to correct the spectral line intensities among which the brightness information characterizes the plasma temperature, and the area information characterizes the ablative mass.

Heavy metal pollution is one of the main problems in water pollution, which is harmful to humans. Surface-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SENLIBS) has been applied to detect trace amounts of heavy metal elements in aqueous solution; however, it is still a big challenge to explore the relationship between the LIBS detection sensitivity and the substrate's physical properties. In this work, four typical substrates, zinc (Zn), magnesium alloy (Mg), nickel (Ni), and silicon (Si), were compared; and the mechanism of spectral enhancement by different substrates in SENLIBS was investigated.

Background: Rice adulteration in the food industry that infringes on the interests of consumers is considered very serious. To realize the rapid and precise quantitation of adulterated rice, a visible near infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging system (380-1000 nm) was developed in the present study. A Savitsky-Golay first derivative (SG1) transform was utilized to eliminate the constant spectral baseline offset.

Self-absorption seriously affects the accuracy and stability of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). To reduce the effect of self-absorption, we investigated the temporal evolution of the self-absorption effect by establishing exponential calibration curves. Meanwhile, the temporal evolution mechanism of the self-absorption effect was also investigated.

Fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FO-LIBS) has been employed in many applications because of the flexibility of optical fiber cable. However, the inhomogeneous elemental distribution of plasmas can cause a self-absorption effect and, hence, significantly hinder the determination of FO-LIBS. Here, to solve this flaw, we took iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) elements in aluminum alloy as examples to investigate the self-absorption reduction and accuracy improvement using spatially resolved FO-LIBS.

Antimony (Sb) in soil is attracting attention in the research community due to its potential toxicity and carcinogenicity. Traditional methods of detecting Sb lack the ability of rapid and nondigestion analysis, which hinders their development and application. Moreover, it is still a challenge for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to detect Sb in soil due to the weak intensities and intense interference of spectral lines.
