Association of Peroxiredoxin 1 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor serum levels with depression and anxiety symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Background: Oxidative stress is considered a possible mechanism of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and depression. This study determined the possible association of serum peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1; a key antioxidant enzyme) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with anxiety and depression symptoms in IBS patients.

Methods: According to the Rome IV diagnostic criteria, 177 IBS patients from February 2019 to July 2019 were included.
