Recent evidence indicates that a high-fat diet (HFD) can promote tumor development, especially colorectal cancer (CRC), by influencing the microbiota. Regulatory circular RNAs (circRNAs) play an important role in modulating host-microbe interactions; however, the specific mechanisms by which circRNAs influence cancer progression by regulating these interactions remain unclear. Here, we report that consumption of a HFD modulates the microbiota by specifically upregulating the expression of the noncoding RNA hsa_circ_0126925 (herein referred to as circ_0126925) in CRC.

Mechanical computing promises to integrate semiconductor-based digital logic in several applications, but it needs straightforward programmable devices for changing computing rules in situ. A methodology based on strain-governed, bistable soft shells that process digital information by interchanging their internal/external surfaces is proposed. This bistable behavior, explained via model-based design, safeguards robustness by working only once for each input pulse.

The human genome is packaged within a three-dimensional (3D) nucleus and organized into structural units known as compartments, topologically associating domains (TADs), and loops. TAD boundaries, separating adjacent TADs, have been found to be well conserved across mammalian species and more evolutionarily constrained than TADs themselves. Recent studies show that structural variants (SVs) can modify 3D genomes through the disruption of TADs, which play an essential role in insulating genes from outside regulatory elements' aberrant regulation.

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) technology can inhibit the environmental transmission of airborne pathogens, but the dose-response behavior of airborne human coronavirus and wavelength-specific inactivation mechanisms are not well understood. This study investigated three competitive UVC sources for their inactivation efficacy and mechanisms against human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43). Results showed the following order of inactivation efficacy: 222-nm KrCl excimer lamp > 263-nm UV-LEDs > 254-nm low-pressure mercury lamp.

Disinfectants, such as bleaching powder, are widely employed in marine aquaculture worldwide to control the bacterial pathogens and eliminate antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Nevertheless, the rapid recovery of prokaryotic community compositions (PCCs) after disinfection may significantly influence the overall efficacy of disinfection. Presently, little is known about the rapid recovery mechanisms of PCCs and its impact on the removal of ARGs in seawater.

The recently discovered metal-like room-temperature plasticity in inorganic semiconductors reshapes our knowledge of the physical properties of materials, giving birth to a series of new-concept functional materials. However, current room-temperature plastic inorganic semiconductors are still very rare, and their performance is inferior to that of classic brittle semiconductors. Taking classic bismuth telluride (BiTe)-based thermoelectric semiconductors as an example, we show that antisite defects can lead to high-density, diverse microstructures that substantially affect mechanical properties and thus successfully transform these bulk semiconductors from brittle to plastic, leading to a high figure of merit of up to 1.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study surveyed Chinese medical students and residents on their knowledge and attitudes towards vaccinations, revealing that while many feel knowledgeable (58.5%) and want to learn more (68.6%), their average knowledge score was only 15.3 out of 21.
  • - Most participants supported vaccines and the national vaccination program, but only 48.3% had received their booster shots, despite good childhood vaccination uptake.
  • - The findings indicate a need for a standardized vaccination curriculum to fill educational gaps among future healthcare providers, as there were no significant knowledge differences between students and residents.

Nonmagnetic media can be magnetized by light via processes referred to as an inverse Faraday effect (IFE). With nonmagnetic metal nanostructures, the IFE is dominated by the presence of light-induced solenoidal surface currents or plasmons with orbital angular momenta, whose properties depend on both the light and nanostructure geometry. Here, through a systematic study of gold nanodisks with different sizes, we demonstrate order-of-magnitude enhancement of the IFE compared to a bare gold film.

Background: While allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is acknowledged as an effective treatment, its efficacy varies, and consensus on predictive indicators for AIT responders remains elusive.

Objective: This study aimed to identify alternative parameters for predicting AIT responders based on clinical data collected in daily practice.

Method: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with house-dust-mite-driven asthma and/or rhinitis who completed 3 years of subcutaneous AIT (3y-AIT).

Objective: This study aims to report the application of 18F-AlF-NOTA-Octreotide PET/CT and 3D printing technology in the diagnosis and treatment of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMT) in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO).

Case Presentation: A 68-year-old male patient (Case 1) was admitted to the Weifang People's Hospital in August 2022 with complaints of "persistent pain in the bilateral flank and lumbosacral region". 18F-AlF-NOTA-Octreotide PET/CT showed high octreotide expression in the left femoral region.

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its Omicron subvariants drastically amplifies transmissibility, infectivity, and immune escape, mainly due to their resistance to most neutralizing antibodies. Thus, exploring the mechanisms underlying antibody evasion is crucial. Although the full-length native form of antibody, immunoglobulin G (IgG), offers valuable insights into the neutralization, structural investigations primarily focus on the fragment of antigen-binding (Fab).

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are evolutionarily conserved in both plants and animals and play critical roles in activating innate immunity to defend against various pathogens. However, the role of MAPK cascades in positively regulating or enhancing viral infections in plants is unclear. In this study, we investigate the involvement of MAPK cascades in infection by the positive-strand RNA virus tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV).

  • Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) in older adults is a critical period for preventing Alzheimer's disease, but only 25.2% of those studied engage in sufficient physical activity (PA) to support cognitive function.* -
  • The study, which included 246 older adults from Baoding City, found that PA levels were influenced by factors such as self-reported health, self-efficacy, social support, and community facilities, while being negatively affected by age, income, and obesity.* -
  • It suggests that interventions targeting individual, interpersonal, and community factors could help boost PA among older adults with SCD, but highlights the challenge of meeting the recommended 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.*

The composition and source information of the aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Daihai Lake, a typical saline lake at the ecologically fragile agro-pastoral area, were explored with three-dimensional excitation and emission matrix fluorescence (3DEEM), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), and fluorescence peaks (B, T, A, M, C, D, and N). Further, the relationship between aquatic DOM fluorescence characteristics and environmental factors were analyzed using correlation analysis in the Daihai Lake. The results showed that the water of Daihai was weakly alkaline, with high nutrient salt concentration and serious organic pollution.

The accumulation of excessive nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs has greatly accelerated eutrophication, which has led to the frequent outbreaks of algal blooms and brought great ecological risks to the related aquatic ecosystems. Evaluations on the eutrophic status of water bodies and estimations of water environment capacity are not only crucial for comprehensive assessment of eutrophic status but also indispensable references for comprehensive management of the aquatic ecosystems. In this study, major environmental variables (chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) of Yankou Reservoir watershed were monitored monthly from May 2020 to March 2022 and based upon the determined results, the comprehensive eutrophic conditions and water environment capacity were evaluated and estimated.
