A plasmonic metasurface composed of a self-assembled monolayer of gold nanoparticles allows for fluorescence imaging with high spatial resolution, owing to the collective excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance. Taking advantage of fluorescence imaging confined to the nano-interface, we examined actin organization in breast cancer cell lines with different metastatic potentials during cell adhesion. Live-cell fluorescence imaging confined within tens of nanometers from the substrate shows a high actin density spanning < 1 μm from the cell edge.

Single strand DNA (ssDNA) chimeras consisting of a silver nanoclusters-nucleating sequence (NC) and an aptamer are widely employed to synthesize functional silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) for sensing purpose. Despite its simplicity, this chimeric-templated AgNCs often leads to undesirable turn-off effect, which may suffer from false positive signals caused by interference. In our effort to elucidate how the relative position of NC and aptamer affects the fluorescence behavior and sensing performance, we systematically formulated these NC and aptamer regions at different position in a DNA chimera.

Although topological insulators (TIs) are known to be robust against non-magnetic perturbations and exhibit edge or surface states as their distinct feature, experimentally it is known that vacancies often occur in these materials and impose strong perturbations. Here, we investigate effects of vacancies on the stability of Z2 topological order using the Kane-Mele (KM) model as a prototype of topological insulators. It is shown that even though a vacancy is not classified as a topological defect in the KM model, it generally induces a pair of degenerate mid-gap bound states only in the TI phase.
