Tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCBQ) is a downstream metabolite of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Previously, we demonstrated that TCBQ caused cytotoxicity due to mitochondrial-related apoptosis. Here, we confirmed the upregulation of death receptor 5 (DR5) followed by the construction of the death-inducing signaling complex (DISC).

Tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCBQ) is a confirmed active metabolite of a well-known environmental pollutant pentachlorophenol (PCP). Unfortunately, there is insufficient knowledge present available on TCBQ's toxicity. Our previous studies indicated that TCBQ induces inflammatory response in vivo and in vitro; however, its exact mechanism needs further investigation.

Our previous studies demonstrated that tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCBQ), an active metabolite of pentachlorophenol, has effects on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. Nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2) is a cellular sensor of electrophilic or oxidative stress that regulates the expression of antioxidant enzymes and defensive proteins. We have illustrated that TCBQ activates Nrf2 signaling by promoting the formation of the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) cross-linking dimer and the formation of an ubiquitination switch from Nrf2 to Keap1.

A spatiotemporal epidemic model with nonlinear incidence rate and Neumann boundary conditions is investigated. On the basis of the analysis of eigenvalues of the eigenpolynomial, we derive the conditions of the existence of Hopf bifurcation in one dimension space. By utilizing the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem of partial functional differential equations (PFDs), the properties of bifurcating periodic solutions are analyzed.

Mauremys reevesii (Geoemydidae) is one of the most common and widespread semi-aquatic turtles in East Asia. The unusually long lifespan of some individuals makes this turtle species a potentially useful model organism for studying the molecular basis of longevity. In this study, pooled total RNA extracted from liver, spleen and skeletal-muscle of three adult individuals were sequenced using Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform.

Autophagy is a "self-eating" destructive process that eliminates damaged organelles to maintain cellular homeostasis. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are one of the most infamous industrial pollutants, which are ubiquitous in nature. In the present study, we found that an active, quinone-type PCB metabolite (PCB29-pQ) treatment causes an autophagic response through mTOR/p70S6k inhibition in HepG2 and MDA-MB-231 cells.

Islet-1 (ISL1) belongs to the LIM homeodomain transcription factor family, which is specifically expressed in certain tissue types only. Previously, we reported that ISL1 is aberrantly overexpressed in gastric cancer (GC). However, its role in GC is not clear.

Bone is the most common distant metastatic site of lung cancer, and is particularly prone to osteolytic damage. Soluble factors secreted from bone marrow-derived cells and tumor cells contribute to the growth and metastasis of cancer cells, and enhance osteolytic damage. BMP9, as the most powerful osteogenetic factor of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, can regulate the development of various tumors.

Ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii) represent more than 50 % of extant vertebrates and are of great evolutionary, ecologic and economic significance, but they are relatively underrepresented in 'omics studies. Increased availability of transcriptome data for these species will allow researchers to better understand changes in gene expression, and to carry out functional analyses. An international project known as the "Transcriptomes of 1,000 Fishes" (Fish-T1K) project has been established to generate RNA-seq transcriptome sequences for 1,000 diverse species of ray-finned fishes.

Objective: To construct a recombinant adenovirus vector containing IL-8 gene and observe its effect on the proliferation, cell cycle and migration of BT549 breast cancer cells.

Methods: IL-8 gene was amplified by PCR using the cDNA from 143B bone sarcoma cells and inserted into shuttle plasmid pAdTrack-TO4. The recombinant shuttle plasmid pAdTrack-TO4-IL-8 was digested by PmeI and then transformed to AdEasier competent cells.

Fish venom remains a virtually untapped resource. There are so few fish toxin sequences for reference, which increases the difficulty to study toxins from venomous fish and to develop efficient and fast methods to dig out toxin genes or proteins. Here, we utilized Chinese yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) as our research object, since it is a representative species in Siluriformes with its venom glands embedded in the pectoral and dorsal fins.

Background: The venom of predatory marine cone snails mainly contains a diverse array of unique bioactive peptides commonly referred to as conopeptides or conotoxins. These peptides have proven to be valuable pharmacological probes and potential drugs because of their high specificity and affinity to important ion channels, receptors and transporters of the nervous system. Most previous studies have focused specifically on the conopeptides from piscivorous and molluscivorous cone snails, but little attention has been devoted to the dominant vermivorous species.

Mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) is essential for the discovery of genetic structures that related to complex quantitative traits. In this study, we identified 264,072 raw SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphisms) by double digest restriction site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq), and utilized 3029 of these SNPs to construct a genetic linkage map in orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) using a regression mapping algorithm. The genetic map contained 24 linkage groups (LGs) spanning a total genetic distance of 1231.

The mechanism of insulin gene transcription control in response to glucose concentration is poorly defined. The islet-restricted transcription factors PDX1 and ISL1 interact with BETA2, activating insulin gene expression. However, their contribution and hierarchical organization in insulin expression control based on glucose concentration remain unknown.

Our previous studies suggested that tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCBQ) elicits pro-inflammatory activities; however, the mechanism of its toxicity toward vascular endothelial cell has not been characterized. Although TCBQ has been shown to stimulate interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) expression, it is unknown whether TCBQ regulates post-translational IL-1β activation. Using human umbilical vein endothelial cells, we discovered that TCBQ not only promotes the expression of NOD-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) components [composed of NLRP3, adaptor molecule apoptosis-associated speck like protein containing a caspase activation and recruitment domain (ASC), and pro-caspase 1] but also participates in priming the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA), a key protein in the nucleotide excision repair pathway, has been shown to promote the resistance of tumor cells to chemotherapeutic drugs by facilitating the DNA repair process. However, the role of XPA in the resistance of melanoma to platinum-based drugs like cisplatin is largely unknown. In this study, we initially found that XPA was expressed at higher levels in cisplatin-resistant melanoma cells than in cisplatin-sensitive ones.

Background: The Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis, is one of the most studied and economically important crustaceans in China. Its transition from a swimming to a crawling method of movement during early development, anadromous migration during growth, and catadromous migration during breeding have been attractive features for research. However, knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanisms that regulate these processes is still very limited.

MicroRNAs are identified as negative regulators in gene expression through silencing gene expression at the post-transcriptional and translational levels. Bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9) is the most effective in inducing osteogenesis in the BMP family, the members of which were originally identified as osteoinductive cytokines. In the current study, the role of miR‑23b in the progression of BMP9‑induced C2C12 myoblasts was investigated.
