AT1 receptor subtype a (AT1Ra) expression is increased in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) compared with Wistar Kyoto controls. However, the chronic role of AT1Ra in the NTS for cardiovascular control is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that the NTS AT1Ra is involved in the neural regulation of the peripheral inflammatory status and linked with hypertension.

Hypertension is an epidemic health concern and a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Although there are available treatment strategies for hypertension, numerous hypertensive patients do not have their clinical symptoms under control and it is imperative that new avenues to treat or prevent high blood pressure in these patients are developed. It is well established that increases in sympathetic nervous system (SNS) outflow and enhanced renin-angiotensin system (RAS) activity are common features of hypertension and various pathological conditions that predispose individuals to hypertension.

This paper studies the problem of sampled-data control for master-slave synchronization schemes that consist of identical chaotic Lur'e systems with time delays. It is assumed that the sampling periods are arbitrarily varying but bounded. In order to take full advantage of the available information about the actual sampling pattern, a novel Lyapunov functional is proposed, which is positive definite at sampling times but not necessarily positive definite inside the sampling intervals.

In this paper, the problem of dissipativity analysis is discussed for discrete-time stochastic neural networks with time-varying discrete and finite-distributed delays. The discretized Jensen inequality and lower bounds lemma are adopted to deal with the involved finite sum quadratic terms, and a sufficient condition is derived to ensure the considered neural networks to be globally asymptotically stable in the mean square and strictly (Q, S, R)-y-dissipative, which is delay-dependent in the sense that it depends on not only the discrete delay but also the finite-distributed delay. Based on the dissipativity criterion, some special cases are also discussed.

Previously we demonstrated that viral-mediated increased expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 within the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus significantly reduces blood pressure in normal rats made hypertensive by infusion of angiotensin II. However, the exact cellular locus of this interleukin-10 action within the paraventricular nucleus is unknown. In the present study we tested whether interleukin-10 exerts direct effects at its receptors located on hypothalamic neurons to offset the neuronal excitatory actions of angiotensin II via its type 1 receptors.

Integrin is important in migration and metastasis of tumor cells. Changes of integrin expression and distribution will cause an alteration of cellular adhesion and migration behaviors. In this study, we investigated sulfatide regulation of the integrin αV subunit expression in hepatoma cells and observed that either exogenous or endogenous sulfatide elicited a robust upregulation of integrin αV subunit mRNA and protein expression in hepatoma cells.

The importance of the (pro)renin receptor (PRR) in the function of the central nervous system is increasingly evident because PRR seems to play a role in neuronal control of cardiovascular function. PRR expression is elevated in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In this study, we tested the hypothesis that altered activity of PRR in the NTS is linked to hypertension.

This paper considers the problem of observer-based adaptive neural network (NN) control for a class of single-input single-output strict-feedback nonlinear stochastic systems with unknown time delays. Dynamic surface control is used to avoid the so-called explosion of complexity in the backstepping design process. Radial basis function NNs are directly utilized to approximate the unknown and desired control input signals instead of the unknown nonlinear functions.

An innovative route to tune upconversion (UC) emission in β-NaYF(4):Yb(3+)/Tm(3+) nanorods through codoping a third rare-earth ion upon continuous wave excitation near 976 nm is reported. The dependence of UC emission on codopant concentration and environment temperature shows that tailored local environment and readjustable depopulation of excited-state ions are responsible for the tuning of UC luminescence. Codopant ions introduce a new distribution of active ions and a modified distance between Tm(3+) and Yb(3+) ions, making UC systems more sensitive to impurity ions than downconversion systems.

This study aimed to investigate the chlorination effects on microbial antibiotic resistance in a drinking water treatment plant. Biochemical identification, 16S rRNA gene cloning and metagenomic analysis consistently indicated that Proteobacteria were the main antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) dominating in the drinking water and chlorine disinfection greatly affected microbial community structure. After chlorination, higher proportion of the surviving bacteria was resistant to chloramphenicol, trimethoprim and cephalothin.

Myxococcus xanthus cells self-organize into periodic bands of traveling waves, termed ripples, during multicellular fruiting body development and predation on other bacteria. To investigate the mechanistic basis of rippling behavior and its physiological role during predation by this Gram-negative soil bacterium, we have used an approach that combines mathematical modeling with experimental observations. Specifically, we developed an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate rippling behavior that employs a new signaling mechanism to trigger cellular reversals.

This paper investigates the problem of master-slave synchronization for neural networks with discrete and distributed delays under variable sampling with a known upper bound on the sampling intervals. An improved method is proposed, which captures the characteristic of sampled-data systems. Some delay-dependent criteria are derived to ensure the exponential stability of the error systems, and thus the master systems synchronize with the slave systems.

We demonstrate an efficient method to design the diffractive phase element for modulating the electric field at the out-of-focus plane of a lens system by using an equivalent Fresnel diffraction in free space. In the monochromatic illumination, we show an example to certify the validity of our method experimentally. In the nonmonochromatic illumination, we theoretically display that the spectral beam splitting and highly confined intensity can be obtained simultaneously at the out-of-focus plane, which has the potential in the solar concentrating system and optical encryption.

By taking full advantage of the characteristics of the packet-based transmission in NCSs, new network delay compensation approaches are proposed to actively compensate the network communication delay under the fuzzy control framework. The nonlinear plant is represented by a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model, and the predictive control input packets are constructed based on parallel distributed compensation technique.

This paper is concerned with the problems of passivity and passification for a class of uncertain switched systems subject to stochastic disturbance and time-varying delay. The passivity property is adopted to analyze the influence of the external disturbance on such systems to achieve prescribed attenuation levels. Based on average dwell time approach, free-weighting matrix method, and Jensen's integral inequality, delay-dependent sufficient conditions are obtained in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which ensure the uncertain switched stochastic time-delay system to be robustly mean-square exponentially stable and stochastically passive.
