Background & Aims: To establish an effective prognostic nomogram for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE).
Methods: The nomogram was constructed based on data obtained from a retrospective study on 2938 patients who received TACE as an initial therapy from 2000 to 2008. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability of the nomogram were compared with seven current commonly used staging systems on HCC by using data obtained from a prospective study on a cohort of 647 patients treated from January 2011 to December 2011 at the same institution.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The inability of chemotherapeutic drugs to selectively target HCC tumor cells because of their predominant resistant phenotype to most conventional anticancer agents bestows a major obstacle for the clinical management of HCC. In this report, we have examined and demonstrated the remarkable heterogeneity of expression of survivin and its phosphorylated active form (p-survivin) in HCC patients' tissues and cell lines.

Objective: To investigate the effect of catalase (CAT) on engraftment of human hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) by co-transplanting umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC) with over-expressed CAT and human HSC into NOD/SCID mice.
Methods: The UC-MSC cultured in vitro were transfected by the retrovirus containing green fluorescent protein (GFP) and GFP-CAT genes respectively. MSC-GFP and MSC-GFP-CAT cell lines were sorted by flow cytometry.

Objective: This study was to investigate the molecular biomarkers of apoptosis induced by BH3 mimetic S1 in human primary AML cells.
Methods: Mononuclear cells were isolated from 27 newly diagnosed AML samples. Apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry.
In the present study, we demonstrate that prolonged treatment by trastuzumab induced resistance of NCI-N87 gastric cancer cells to trastuzumab. The resistant cells possessed typical characteristics of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT)/cancer stem cells and acquired more invasive and metastatic potentials both in vitro and in vivo. Long term treatment with trastuzumab dramatically inhibited the phosphorylation of Akt, but triggered the activation of STAT3.

In this manner intriguing questions, such as why some crystals bend with an applied force while others break, and why one polymorph of a drug exhibits exceptional tabletability compared to others, can be addressed in terms of the anisotropy of the topology of pairwise intermolecular interaction energies. This approach is applied to a sample of organic molecular crystals with known bending, shearing and brittle behaviour, to illustrate its use in rationalising their mechanical behaviour at a molecular level.

Rationale: Early diagnosis and treatment of tuberculous meningitis saves lives, but current laboratory diagnostic tests lack sensitivity.
Objectives: We investigated whether the detection of intracellular bacteria by a modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain and early secretory antigen target (ESAT)-6 in cerebrospinal fluid leukocytes improves tuberculous meningitis diagnosis.
Methods: Cerebrospinal fluid specimens from patients with suspected tuberculous meningitis were stained by conventional Ziehl-Neelsen stain, a modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain involving cytospin slides with Triton processing, and an ESAT-6 immunocytochemical stain.
Aims: To investigate the effects of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) on proliferation and phenotypic transformation of rat mesangial cells (MCs) under high glucose conditions and its possible signal transduction pathway.
Methods: Rat MC were divided into 4 groups: the control group, the high glucose group, the high glucose and wortmannin group, and the high glucose and uPA group. MC proliferation in all groups was detected by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method.
