Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a valuable steroid drug with widespread clinical applications, but traditional chemical synthesis is environmentally harmful and requires complex reaction conditions. This study introduces a one-step microbial transformation method for the production of DHT from inexpensive phytosterols (PS) using engineered Mycolicibacterium neoaurum (MNR). The heterologous expression of 5α-reductase (5α-R) and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17β-HSD) in MNR enabled the efficient conversion of PS to DHT.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) carries risks due to potential hidden lymph node disease, with unclear optimal examined lymph node (ELN) counts for patients with lateral metastasis (cN1b).
  • A study of 982 cN1b PTC patients showed that examining more ELNs correlates with a lower chance of missing occult nodal disease; specifically, 20 ELNs are needed for 95% confidence of no hidden disease.
  • Higher ELN counts lead to lower recurrence rates, indicating that thorough lymph node examination is crucial for accurate staging and treatment planning in these patients.

Three-dimensional Spatial Transcriptomics has revolutionized our understanding of tissue regionalization, organogenesis, and development. However, existing approaches overlook either spatial information or experiment-induced distortions, leading to significant discrepancies between reconstruction results and in vivo cell locations, causing unreliable downstream analysis. To address these challenges, we propose ST-GEARS (Spatial Transcriptomics GEospatial profile recovery system through AnchoRS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how thyroid autoantibodies might affect a type of thyroid cancer called papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in over 15,000 patients in China.
  • Researchers found that 34.1% of patients tested positive for thyroid autoantibodies, and certain types were linked to more severe cancer features.
  • Higher levels of one type of antibody (TGAb) were connected to worse cancer traits, while another type (TPOAb) seemed to lower the risk of some bad characteristics.

The 329-type bismuth (Bi)-based metal halide (MH) polycrystalline films have potential to be applied in the new generation of X-ray imaging technology owing to high X-ray absorption coefficients and excellent detection properties. However, the mutually independent [BiX] units and numerous grain boundaries in the material lead to low carrier transport and collection capabilities, severe ion migration, large dark currents, and poor response uniformity. Here, a new multi-phenyl ring methyltriphenylphosphonium (MTP) is designed to optimize the energy band structure.

Deep learning techniques have been investigated for the computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid nodules in ultrasound images. However, most existing thyroid nodule detection methods were simply based on static ultrasound images, which cannot well explore spatial and temporal information following the clinical examination process. In this paper, we propose a novel video-based semi-supervised framework for ultrasound thyroid nodule detection.

Flash flooding is considered one of the most lethal natural hazards in the USA as measured by the ratio of fatalities to people affected. However, the occurrence of injuries and fatali- ties during flash flooding was found to be rare (about 2% occurrence rate) based on our analysis of 6,065 flash flood events that occurred in Texas over a 15-year period (2005 to 2019). This article identifies climatic, environmental, and situational factors that affect the occurrence of fatalities and injuries in flash flood events and provides a predictive model to estimate the likelihood of these occurrences.

Although the incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing year by year, most patients, especially those with differentiated thyroid cancer, can usually be cured with surgery, radioactive iodine, and thyroid-stimulating hormone suppression. However, treatment options for patients with poorly differentiated thyroid cancers or radioiodine-refractory thyroid cancer have historically been limited. Altered energy metabolism is one of the hallmarks of cancer and a well-documented feature in thyroid cancer.

Manipulating interface defects can minimize interfacial nonradiative recombination, thus increasing the stability and performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, copper acetylacetonate [Cu(acac)] as a passivator is used to treat the interface between Spiro-OMeTAD and perovskite. Owing to the strong chelation, the uncoordinated Pb could react with -C═O/-COH functional groups, firmly anchoring acetylacetonate at this interface or the grain boundaries (GBs) of perovskite films to construct multiple ligand bridges, accompanied by the p-type copper iodide formation with copper substituting lead.

The rapid proliferative biological behavior of primary foci of anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) makes it a lethal tumor. According to the specific iodine uptake capacity of thyroid cells and enhanced endocytosis of ATC cells, we designed a kind of nanoclay drug-loading system and showed a promising treatment strategy for ATC. Introducing potassium iodide (KI) improves the homoaggregation of clay nanoparticles and then affects the distribution of nanoparticles in vivo, which makes KI@DOX-Kaolin enriched almost exclusively in thyroid tissue.
