The transition period from automation to manual, known as the takeover process, presents challenges for drivers due to the deficiency in collecting requisite contextual information. The current study collected drivers' eye movement in a simulated takeover experiment, and their Situation Awareness (SA) was assessed using the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) method. The drivers' Stationary Gaze Entropy (SGE) was calculated based on the percentages of time they spent on six pre-defined Areas of Interests (AOIs).

Cognitive load can impair an operator's ability to optimally scan and process relevant information that is critical to the safe and successful operation of an aircraft. Since the cognitive demands experienced by pilots fluctuate throughout a given flight due to changes in task demands that range from high to low cognitive load, it has become increasingly important to objectively track and quantify these changes accordingly. The analysis of eye movements has been shown to be a promising method to understand information acquisition, processing efficiency, and how these aspects of cognition impact pilot performance.

Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) repeats harbor ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes and intergenic spacers (IGS). RNA polymerase (Pol) I transcribes rRNA genes yielding rRNA components of ribosomes. IGS-associated Pol II prevents Pol I from excessively synthesizing IGS non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) that can disrupt nucleoli and rRNA production.

Gaze behaviour has been used as a proxy for information processing capabilities that underlie complex skill performance in real-world domains such as aviation. These processes are highly influenced by task requirements, expertise and can provide insight into situation awareness (SA). Little research has been done to examine the extent to which gaze behaviour, task performance and SA are impacted by various task manipulations within the confines of early-stage skill development.

Article Synopsis
  • Vessels encapsulating tumor clusters (VETC) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are linked to worse patient outcomes, and this study aims to predict this pattern using preoperative Gd-EOB-DTPA MRI imaging.
  • The study evaluated 98 HCC patients and identified three key predictors of VETC: peritumoral hypointensity on the hepatobiliary phase, low tumor-to-liver signal intensity ratio, and low tumor-to-liver apparent diffusion coefficient ratio.
  • A nomogram was created from these predictors, achieving moderate accuracy, and both VETC pattern and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage were shown to significantly affect recurrence-free survival after surgery.

In the recent years, Active Assisted Living (AAL) technologies used for autonomous tracking and activity recognition have started to play major roles in geriatric care. From fall detection to remotely monitoring behavioral patterns, vital functions and collection of air quality data, AAL has become pervasive in the modern era of independent living for the elderly section of the population. However, even with the current rate of progress, data access and data reliability has become a major hurdle especially when such data is intended to be used in new age modelling approaches such as those using machine learning.

Introduction: This pilot study employed a non-randomized control trial design to explore the impact of physical activity within a virtual reality (VR) environment on multisensory processing among community-dwelling older adults.

Methods: The investigation compared both chronic (over 6 weeks) and acute effects of VR-based physical activity to a reading control group. The evaluation metrics for multisensory processing included audiovisual response time (RT), simultaneity judgments (SJ), sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI), and temporal order judgments (TOJ).

Eye movements have been used to examine the cognitive function of pilots and understand how information processing abilities impact performance. Traditional and advanced measures of gaze behaviour effectively reflect changes in cognitive load, situational awareness, and expert-novice differences. However, the extent to which gaze behaviour changes during the early stages of skill development has yet to be addressed.

This research explores the enantioselective hydrosulfonylation of various α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds via the use of visible light and redox-active chiral Ni-catalysis, facilitating the synthesis of enantioenriched α-chiral sulfones with remarkable enantioselectivity (exceeding 99 % ee). A significant challenge entails enhancing the reactivity between chiral metal-coordinated carbonyl compounds and moderate electrophilic sulfonyl radicals, aiming to minimize the background reactions. The success of our approach stems from two distinctive attributes: 1) the Cl-atom abstraction employed for sulfonyl radical generation from sulfonyl chlorides, and 2) the single-electron reduction to produce a key enolate radical Ni-complex.

To address the problem of mechanical defect identification in a high-voltage circuit breaker (HVCB), this paper studies the circuit breaker vibration signal and proposes a method of feature extraction based on phase-space reconstruction of the vibration substages. To locate mechanical defects in circuit breakers, vibration signals are divided into different substages according to the time sequence of the parts of the circuit breakers. The largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) of the vibration signals' substages is calculated, and then the substages are reconstructed in high-dimensional phase space.

As a prerequisite step of scene text reading, scene text detection is known as a challenging task due to natural scene text diversity and variability. Most existing methods either adopt bottom-up sub-text component extraction or focus on top-down text contour regression. From a hybrid perspective, we explore hierarchical text instance-level and component-level representation for arbitrarily-shaped scene text detection.

Recent studies show that antiviral systems are remarkably conserved from bacteria to mammals, demonstrating that unique insights into these systems can be gained by studying microbial organisms. Unlike in bacteria, however, where phage infection can be lethal, no cytotoxic viral consequence is known in the budding yeast even though it is chronically infected with a double-stranded RNA mycovirus called L-A. This remains the case despite the previous identification of conserved antiviral systems that limit L-A replication.

Objectives: Noninvasive fetal electrocardiography (FECG) offers many advantages over alternative fetal monitoring techniques in evaluating fetal health conditions. However, it is difficult to extract a clean FECG signal with morphological features from an abdominal ECG recorded at the maternal abdomen; the signal is usually contaminated by the maternal ECG and various noises. The aim of the work is to extract an FECG signal that preserves the morphological features from the mother's abdominal ECG recording, which allows for accurately estimating the fetal heart rate (FHR) and analyzing the waveforms of the fetal ECG.

In deep learning-based image registration, the deformable region with complex anatomical structures is an important factor affecting the accuracy of network registration. However, it is difficult for existing methods to pay attention to complex anatomical regions of images. At the same time, the receptive field of the convolutional neural network is limited by the size of its convolution kernel, and it is difficult to learn the relationship between the voxels with far spatial location, making it difficult to deal with the large region deformation problem.
