A National Trauma Research Action Plan identified the involvement of burn survivors as critical informants to determine the direction of research. This study employed a web-based survey to identify care gaps in a sample of burn survivors. We surveyed burn survivors from around the United States through social media and email contact with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors.

The current consensus is that excision should be performed before the sixth hospital day. We hypothesize that patients who undergo excision within 48 hours have better outcomes.

However, many critically ill trauma patients meet the non-specific laboratory and sign/symptom thresholds for VAP, so the TQIP designation of VAP depends heavily upon imaging evidence. We hypothesized that physician opinions widely vary regarding chest radiograph findings significant for VAP.

However, diagnosis in females is often delayed owing to nonspecific symptoms. We sought to assess disparities in management and outcomes between males and females with torsion.

They are most commonly localized to the gastric antrum, small intestines and recto-sigmoid colon.

We hypothesize that WBV reduces pain during rehabilitation compared to standard therapy alone. Patients with ≥1% TBSA burn to one or more extremities from October 2014 to December 2015 were randomized to vibration (VIBE) or control.

Additionally, we used propensity score-matched analysis (PSMA) to compare these outcomes for thoracoscopic versus open surgical approaches.
Methods: Kids' Inpatient Database (1997-2009) was used to identify congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) and pulmonary sequestration (PS) patients undergoing resection.
Background: In 2011, about 30,000 people died in motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) in the United States. We sought to evaluate the causes of prehospital deaths related to MVCs and to assess whether these deaths were potentially preventable.
Methods: Miami-Dade Medical Examiner records for 2011 were reviewed for all prehospital deaths of occupants of 4-wheeled motor vehicle collisions.
Background: Obesity negatively affects outcomes after trauma and surgery; results after burns are more limited and controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of obesity on clinical and economic outcomes after thermal injury.
Methods: The National Inpatient Sample was queried for adults from 2005-2009 with International Classification of Diseases-9 codes for burn injury.

Background: Infection is the leading cause of death in burn patients. Historically, this was due to burn wound sepsis but pneumonia has now emerged as the most common source. In light of the increasing incidence of multi-drug-resistant organisms, the description of rare infections is paramount in continuing the fight against deadly pathogens.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThere continues to be debate about the routine use of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis in burn patients. The concern is that routine prophylaxis may lead to adverse events. The debate hinges on the incidence of DVT and its relation to the risk-benefit ratio.

However, few recent works have been done to evaluate the patients who die in the field. Understanding the epidemiology of these deaths is crucial for trauma system performance evaluation and improvement.

Some authors assert that a negative computed tomography (CT) scan is sufficient. Others argue that CT alone misses occult unstable injuries, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will alter treatment.

The tumor often clinically behaves like a cancer but without histological evidence of malignancy. This case study of a 14 year-old boy is the first report in the literature of an inflammatory pseudotumor presenting as an obstructing apple core lesion, mimicking a rectal carcinoma.
