Optimising emergency department and acute care for people experiencing mental health problems: a nominal group study.

Objective The aim of this study was to identify potential model of care approaches and systems processes for people presenting to acute healthcare settings with mental health problems, including mental illnesses. Methods Five (consensus) nominal group technique sessions were conducted in 2019 with a purposive sample of stakeholders from health, police, ambulance and consumer agencies (n  = 21). Sessions were recorded, transcribed and analysed for thematic content.

Prevention of primary nonfunction of canine islet autografts by treatment with pravastatin.

Background: Nonspecific inflammation is the primary cause of early islet graft loss. We have shown in mice that pravastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitor, prevents primary nonfunction of islet isografts by reducing inflammatory reactions at the graft site. This study was designed to test the effectiveness of this agent in a large animal model, dogs, by transplanting autologous islets.

Prevention of primary islet isograft nonfunction in mice with pravastatin.

Background: Nonspecific inflammatory damage in the early stages of transplantation is the major cause of primary islet graft nonfunction. Using murine isografts, we attempted to prevent this islet graft damage by treating recipients with pravastatin (Pravacol), a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitor. Nicotinamide was also tested to determine the synergistic effect of both agents.

Protective effects of essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD) on autoimmunity were shown in rodents. Our goal was to investigate the mechanisms of EFAD effects on autoimmune diabetes in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice. Weanling female mice were randomized between a control diet group and an EFAD diet group, and the development of diabetes and immune response was determined over a 6-month period.

Recently five somatostatin receptor subtypes (SSTR) have been cloned, allowing the development of highly specific selective agonists for these SSTR. Fetal pancreas transplantation in miniature swine. II. Survival of fetal pig pancreas allografts cultured at room temperature.

Islet-allograft survival has been shown to be markedly prolonged in rodents when donor tissue has been precultured at 24 degrees C. In this study, the feasibility of this approach was tested in NIH minipigs transplanted with fetal pancreases. Collagenase-digested fetal pig pancreatic tissues survived in culture at 24 degrees C for 6-7 days and continued to grow in vitro at 37 degrees C after being transferred.

Analysis of drug involvement in traffic fatalities in Alabama.

Toxicology studies were performed on a subset of highway fatalities in Alabama. Results of those tests were analyzed for the years 1980 through 1984. It was found that 63% of driver fatalities tested had some level of blood alcohol concentration.
