Background: The efficacy of surgical interventions relies on appropriate closure of the surgical site, which should also be devoid of bacteria. Plaque accumulation is a constant challenge that hampers the healing outcome. Sutures used to close the wound serve as reservoirs for microbes, increasing the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs).

  • There is an increasing interest in weight loss, driven by environmental factors contributing to rising obesity rates during the pandemic.
  • Exercise and diet are key controllable factors that influence energy balance.
  • Hydrotherapy methods, like cold-water immersion and steam sessions, can aid in weight management through thermogenesis, engaging brown adipose tissue and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1).

Background: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked chromosomal recessive disorder, characterized by the progressive loss of muscle function and mass. Male individuals affected by this condition often live into their late teens or early twenties and are confined to wheelchairs. Since there is currently no treatment for DMD, complementary and alternative medicines have become more widely used to help patients manage their condition and enhance their quality of life.

  • Rotator cuff related shoulder pain (RCRSP) greatly affects individuals' physical and psychological health, but research is limited in low-to-middle-income countries like India.* -
  • A study in South India interviewed 10 participants to explore their lived experiences with RCRSP, uncovering themes like the burden of pain, treatment uncertainties, and coping mechanisms influenced by cultural norms.* -
  • The results suggest a need for a comprehensive management strategy that incorporates physical treatment, psychological support, and cultural beliefs to effectively address RCRSP in these communities.*

Article Synopsis
  • The case discusses a 25-year-old male who experienced a fracture in both the neck and shaft of his femur, leading to non-union, which is a challenging condition to treat.
  • The treatment involved a combination of open reduction, dual plating with bone grafting for the shaft, and a valgus subtrochanteric osteotomy along with dynamic hip screw and impaction bone grafting for the neck.
  • The study emphasizes the importance of biomechanical correction to promote healing, noting that this approach can lead to better outcomes in treating femur non-unions.

Background: While we attempt to restore occlusion in completely edentulous patients there is a consensus among clinicians to articulate the cast using average value and avoid performing facebow transfer. Various studies question the application of facebow transfer in the fabrication of removable complete denture fabrication.

Aim: This study was therefore aimed to study the effect on condylar guidance with casts mounted by the facebow method, Bonwill's method, and radiographic method.

Objective: To assess how well steroidal nasal sprays and oral steroids work for treating CRS.

Methods: Two hundred patients with CRS were included in a randomized controlled experiment. The patients were split into two groups: Group B received steroidal nasal sprays (fluticasone propionate 110 mcg/day in each nostril for 12 weeks) and Group A received oral steroids (prednisolone 30 mg/day for 14 days, followed by tapering over 7 days).

Article Synopsis
  • Patients recovering from COVID-19 often experience lingering symptoms known as Long COVID, which can manifest weeks or months after their initial infection, but the prevalence of this condition is not well understood.
  • To address this, a collaborative initiative called the Long COVID Computational Challenge (L3C) was launched to develop effective risk prediction tools for identifying individuals at risk of Long COVID using extensive healthcare data from over 75 institutions in the U.S.
  • The challenge resulted in 74 teams creating 35 predictive models, with the top models achieving high accuracy scores, demonstrating the potential for machine learning to enhance the identification of patients at risk for Long COVID.

Article Synopsis
  • Clavicle fractures and acromioclavicular (AC) joint disruptions are common injuries, but having both at the same time is rare.
  • A case study highlights a 21-year-old man who suffered a mid-shaft clavicle fracture in a traffic accident and was found to have a type 4 AC joint disruption during surgery.
  • Successful treatment involved plating the clavicle and repairing the AC joint, leading to full recovery and shoulder function after therapy.

Introduction: Distal femur fractures are high-velocity injuries which accounts for 7-10% of all femoral fractures of which 5-10% are open fractures. Despite advances in techniques and implants, treatment remains a challenge, in many situations due to increased risk of infection, non-union and loss of range of motion. Surgical management of such complex injury includes radical debridement with stabilization followed by management of gap non-union with appropriate techniques and restores the range of motion.

Introduction: The results of primary total knee replacement (TKR) using hinge implants performed in the Indian population with post-polio residual paresis (PPRP) are unknown. The purpose of this study was to report the outcome of primary rotating hinge TKR in Indian patients with PPRP at a minimum follow-up of 12 months.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological records of six patients treated with primary rotating hinge TKR.

Several finite element (FE) studies reported performances of various lumbar fusion surgical approaches. However, comparative studies on the performance of Open Laminectomy plus Posterolateral Fusion (OL-PLF) and Open Laminectomy plus Transforaminal Interbody Fusion (OL-TLIF) surgical approaches are rare. In the current FE study, the variation in ranges of motions (ROM), stress-strain distributions in an implanted functional spinal unit (FSU) and caudal adjacent soft structures between OL-PLF and OL-TLIF virtual models were investigated.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic, polyarticular autoimmune inflammatory disease that destroys the capsule and synovial lining of joints. Antirheumatic treatment reduces disease activity and inflammation, but not all patients respond to treatment. Naturopathy, a research-based complementary and alternative medicine, may be useful in these patients, but there is little data on the effect of Naturopathy interventions on inflammation and disease activity in RA.

Ketogenic diets have been widely used for weight loss and are increasingly used in the management of type 2 diabetes. Despite evidence that ketones have multiple positive effects on kidney function, common misconceptions about ketogenic diets, such as high protein content and acid load, have prevented their widespread use in individuals with impaired kidney function. Clinical trial evidence focusing on major adverse kidney events is sparse.

Background: Digital storytelling is an arts-informed approach that engages short, first-person videos, typically three to five minutes in length, to communicate a personal narrative. Prior to the pandemic, digital storytelling initiatives in health services research were often conducted during face-to-face workshops scheduled over multiple days. However, throughout the COVID-19 lockdowns where social distancing requirements needed to be maintained, many digital storytelling projects were adapted to online platforms.

The EOS™2D/3D system is a low-dose, 3D imaging system that utilizes two perpendicular X-ray beams to create simultaneous frontal and lateral images of the body. This is a useful modality to assess spinal pathologies. However, due to the slow imaging acquisition time up to 25 s, motion artifacts (MA) frequently occur.
