Atrial-esophageal fistulas are rare and potentially fatal complications that can occur from radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Due to the proximity of the right atrium to the esophagus, thermal injuries can involuntarily lead to connections between the heart and esophagus. In this case study, a 67-year-old male developed an atrial-esophageal fistula following atrial fibrillation ablation.

Enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS) represents a constellation of evidence-based peri-operative methods aimed to reduce the physiological and psychological stress patients experience after cardiac surgery, with the primary objective of providing an expedited recovery to pre-operative functional status. The method involves pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative interventions as well as direct patient engagement to be successful. Numerous publications in regard to the benefits of enhanced recovery have been presented, including decreased post-operative complications, shortened length of stay, decreased overall healthcare costs, and higher patient satisfaction.

In our case, a 46-year-old female with severe aortic insufficiency presented for minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. The patient was taken to the operating room, where transesophageal echocardiography showed severe aortic regurgitation with prolapse of the non-coronary cusp. Introduction: Embolization of a spinal cord arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is considered a high-risk procedure due to the potential risk of spinal cord injury. We present two cases illustrating the benefits of utilizing pharmacologic provocative testing under general anesthesia with continuous neurophysiologic monitoring of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials (TCeMEPs) to identify the functional territory of the catheterized vessels prior to embolization.
