Informal carers play a vital role in the care and well-being of older people with dementia. This article examines the psychological and economic impacts caregiving has on carers of people with suspected dementia and the mechanisms by which they cope with challenges. A mixed-method design was adopted.

Risk factors for severe acute malnutrition among children aged 6-59 months: A community-based case-control study from Vellore, Southern India.

Background: Malnutrition plays an important role in the economic burden of society as well as the country. This study aimed to identify the various risk factors and determinants of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) as defined by WHO growth reference standards in children aged 6 months to 59 months living in Vellore.

Methods: A community-based case-control study matched for age (±2months), gender and location was done among the children of the age group 6- 59 months residing in both rural and urban Vellore.

Strategies for home nutritional support in dementia care and its relevance in low-middle-income countries.

Older people suffering from dementia are prone to develop malnutrition. Ensuring adequate nutrition among such patients has always been a challenge for the carers due to the pathological and chronic nature of the disease. In this article, the author tries to analyze the use of five different strategies in providing adequate nutrition for such patients in their own homes by the carers using a narrative literature review method.

Potentially inappropriate medications prescribed for older persons: A study from two teaching hospitals in Southern India.

Background: Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are a major concern in geriatric care. The primary objective of our study was to assess the prevalence of PIMs prescribed for older persons attending outpatient setting of two teaching hospitals in Kerala state in South India, where the population is aging.

Creating a Positive Attitude toward Dying Patients among Nursing Students: Is the Current Curriculum Adequate?

Context: Nurses play an inevitable role in providing compassionate care and support to dying patients and their families. However, it has been a bone of contention that whether the nursing curriculum is sufficiently set to achieve this goal.

Aims: The primary objective of this study is to assess the attitude of nursing students attending a private nursing school in Central Travancore region toward the care of dying using the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale Form-B (FATCOD-B).

Household food security in an urban slum: Determinants and trends.

Introduction: As we are moving from millennium development goals to sustainable development goals, food insecurity is imposing a formidable challenge to the policymakers, especially in developing countries such as India. A survey conducted in the urban slum areas of Vellore district, 6 years back, had reported food insecurity as high as 75%. The current study was a resurvey to assess the food security status in the aforementioned area.

Seniors' Recreation Centers in Rural India: Need of the Hour.

Aim: To empower and bring the underprivileged senior citizens in the rural areas to the mainstream of life through setting up of model "senior citizens' recreation centers" that can be replicated in the other parts of the country.

Materials And Methods: Six senior citizens' recreation centers are run in six villages under a community health program of a leading Medical College in South India, which were started by looking into their perceived needs and in a location where organized self-help women groups (SHGs) showed willingness to take the role of caretakers. Together there are 140 members in 6 centers and the most deserving members were identified using a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) method.
