Breaking Barriers Transforming Primary Care to Serve the Physical Health Needs of Individuals With SMI in the NHS.

This critical review paper examines the health inequalities faced by individuals with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) in the United Kingdom; highlighting the disproportionate burden of physical health conditions such as respiratory disorders, cardiac illnesses, diabetes and stroke amongst this population. These conditions contribute to a significantly higher rate of premature mortality in individuals with SMI, with two-thirds of these deaths deemed preventable. Despite the National Health Service (NHS) acknowledging the need to address these health inequalities, the mortality gap between those with and without SMI continues to widen.

'We are not trained to do clinical work': security staff providing physical restraint for NGT feeding in English paediatric wards-a qualitative multi-informant study.

Objective: To gain insights into the experience, and impact, of using security staff to facilitate physical restraints for nasogastric tube feeding.

Design: A cross-sectional design using 39 individual interviews, three online focus groups and three written submissions involving young people with lived experience (PWLE), parents/carers, paediatric staff and security staff involved in nasogastric feeding under restraint in paediatric settings in England. Qualitative semistructured interviews were transcribed and thematically analysed.

Outbreak of perichondritis associated with ear piercings and a contaminated water system.

In September 2023, the UK Health Security Agency's (UKHSA) South West Health Protection Team received notification of patients with perichondritis. All five cases had attended the same cosmetic piercing studio and a multi-disciplinary outbreak control investigation was subsequently initiated. An additional five cases attending the same studio were found.

Examining the role of common variants in rare neurodevelopmental conditions.

Although rare neurodevelopmental conditions have a large Mendelian component, common genetic variants also contribute to risk. However, little is known about how this polygenic risk is distributed among patients with these conditions and their parents nor its interplay with rare variants. It is also unclear whether polygenic background affects risk directly through alleles transmitted from parents to children, or whether indirect genetic effects mediated through the family environment also play a role.

Autosomal recessive coding variants are well-known causes of rare disorders. We quantified the contribution of these variants to developmental disorders in a large, ancestrally diverse cohort comprising 29,745 trios, of whom 20.4% had genetically inferred non-European ancestries.

Reported Barriers and Facilitators for Autistic Individuals, Persons with Other Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and Their Caregivers to Receive the COVID-19 Vaccine: A Pilot Study.

Autistic individuals and persons with other intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) may experience challenges in social engagement, sensory processing, and behavior rigidity. This population is more likely to face barriers to successful preventative healthcare, including vaccines, compared to neurotypical peers. Autistic individuals and persons with other IDD may be at greater risk for COVID-19 infection due to sensory dysregulation that interferes with mitigation such as wearing masks, and challenges in social communication that impose difficulties in understanding and adhering to prevention measures.

Objective: Falls are a major challenge to public health, particularly among older adults. Understanding factors that influence fall risk is pivotal in the prevention of falls and fall-related injuries. This study evaluated the timing of emergency medical service (EMS) activations for falls and transport patterns for adults age ≥65.

Here we examine how a temperature change, such as is associated with fever, affects the mutation rate towards antibiotic resistance.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting individuals worldwide and characterized by deficits in social interaction along with the presence of restricted interest and repetitive behaviors. Despite decades of behavioral research, little is known about the brain mechanisms that influence social behaviors among children with ASD. This, in part, is due to limitations of traditional imaging techniques specifically targeting pediatric populations.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are often regarded as experiencing wasting of muscle mass and declining muscle strength and function, collectively termed sarcopenia. The extent of skeletal muscle wasting in clinical and preclinical CKD populations is unclear. We evaluated skeletal muscle atrophy in preclinical and clinical models of CKD, with multiple sub-analyses for muscle mass assessment methods, CKD severity, sex and across the different preclinical models of CKD.

The Effect of Yoga on Anxiety, Attention and Social-Emotional Symptoms in Preschool Children: A Pilot Quasi-Experimental Study.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a short yoga session on behavioral and cognitive outcomes in preschool children. 72 children ages 4-6 from a local preschool were divided into an intervention group (n = 32), and a control group (n = 40) that completed a 15 min, age-appropriate yoga video consisting of interactive poses including: sun salutation, cat, cow, downward dog, upward dog, warrior, gorilla, etc. Three teacher-rated questionnaires and a cancellation task (Cx) were administered pre-intervention and post-intervention.

In the current study, we examined the reach and accuracy of videos providing informational content about autism on TikTok, a popular social media platform.

Methods: We examined engagement indicators (including views and "likes") for the TikTok videos associated with the #Autism hashtag.

Dietary Intake and Arterial Stiffness in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

Arterial stiffness is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease that is affected by diet. However, research understanding how these dietary risk factors are related to arterial stiffness during childhood is limited. The purpose of this review was to determine whether various dietary factors were associated with arterial stiffness in the pediatric population.

A Retrospective Analysis of Sacubitril/Valsartan in Heart Failure and Chronic Kidney Disease.

Sacubitril/valsartan has demonstrated benefit for patients with heart failure (HF); however, patients with advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as defined by the National Kidney Foundation have historically been underrepresented in landmark HF trials. The goal of this study is to examine the safety and efficacy of sacubitril/valsartan in patients with HF and concomitant CKD stages III to V. This multicenter, retrospective, observational study included adult patients with HF and CKD stages III to V prescribed sacubitril/valsartan during hospital admission or upon discharge from January 2017 through March 2022.

Microbial diversity and antimicrobial resistance in faecal samples from acute medical patients assessed through metagenomic sequencing.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to global public health. However, unsatisfactory approaches to directly measuring the AMR burden carried by individuals has hampered efforts to assess interventions aimed at reducing selection for AMR. Metagenomics can provide accurate detection and quantification of AMR genes within an individual person's faecal flora (their gut "resistome").

Background: We sought to improve the referral process to a community paramedicine (CP) program following a 9-1-1 encounter.

Methods: An electronic health record (EHR) for CP records with the ability to link to emergency EHR was identified and implemented with a single-click referral to the CP program. Referrals were tracked for 15 months before and after implementation.
