Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency can present a diagnostic dilemma owing to the varying degrees of disease severity and the wide range of precipitating factors. Here, we report a case of a 56-year-old man who presented with signs and symptoms of heart failure and, during the course of treatment, developed intravascular hemolysis. On investigation, he was found to be G6PD deficient.

Background: Pulmonary and pleural involvement is fairly common in patients with lymphoma, especially in the setting of progressive or recurrent disease. Pleuropulmonary involvement in lymphoma may occur as a single pattern or as a combination of multiple patterns which can often mimic unrelated pathologies.

Methods: Review of our institutional database from 01 Jan 2015 to 04 Oct 2017 revealed 90 patients with pulmonary and/or pleural lesions attributable to lymphoma.

Article Synopsis
  • - Community-acquired pneumonia significantly impacts health, and alveolar macrophages are essential for the immune response against it, leading us to investigate their changes post-infection.
  • - In mice that recovered from Streptococcus pneumoniae infections, alveolar macrophages exhibited long-lasting changes in surface markers and improved protection against new pneumococcal infections.
  • - Detailed analysis of these macrophages revealed lasting metabolic and genetic changes that reflect a heightened and more human-like immune response after recovering from pneumonia.

Objective: To assess the changes in alar base width in patients who underwent Lefort 1 osteotomy with anterior maxillary osteotomy (AMO), where conventional alar cinch suturing was done to control the alar base widening.

Materials And Methods: This study was conducted on pre-operative and post-operative photographs of 100 female patients aged between 18 and 30 years who underwent Lefort 1 osteotomy with AMO. The derived values were then compared and analysed using test.

Background: Thyroid cancer is a rare cancer, accounting for only 1% of all malignancies in England and Wales. Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) accounts for ≈94% of all thyroid cancers. Patients with DTC often require treatment with radioactive iodine.

Primary pineal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is extremely rare, and only three cases have been reported so far. Here, we report a case of 12-year-old male who presented with complaints of diplopia and diminution of vision since 15 days. He also had left-sided facial paresis.

Misregulation of gut function and homeostasis impinges on the overall well-being of the entire organism. Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age, and globally, 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhea are reported every year.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is commonly performed for abdominal pain in children, and in the presence of alarm symptoms, the diagnostic yield of this procedure is high. The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of EGD when performed for uncomplicated abdominal pain in children in the absence of alarm symptoms. Charts of all children less than 18 years of age who underwent EGD at the University of Florida between January 2016 and October 2018 were reviewed.

Peer-assisted learning (PAL) is an educational method where students teach their peers. PAL has been increasingly integrated into medical education in various formats including near-peer tutoring (NPT), reciprocal-peer tutoring (RPT), and peer-to-peer tutoring. This review adds to current literature by focusing exclusively on outcomes from PAL peer tutoring programs implemented in conjunction with basic science courses in medical education.

Purpose: This study examined postoperative heart failure (HF) and respiratory failure (RF) complications and related healthcare utilization for one year following cardiac surgery.

Methods: This study identified adult patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and/or valve procedures from the Cerner Health Facts® database. It included patients experiencing postoperative HF or RF complications.

Two species, and , cause approximately 90% of bacterial dysentery worldwide. While is the dominant species in low-income countries, causes the majority of infections in middle- and high-income countries. is a prototypic cytosolic bacterium; once intracellular, it rapidly escapes the phagocytic vacuole and causes pyroptosis of macrophages, which is important for pathogenesis and bacterial spread.

Background: Treatment with radioactive iodine is effective for many patients with progressive, locally advanced or metastatic, differentiated thyroid cancer. However, some patients become refractory to treatment. These types of patients are considered to have radioactive iodine refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RR-DTC).

Retrieval studies show that metal-on-metal acetabular shell-liner tapers are susceptible to corrosion, which is hypothesized to arise from mechanically-assisted crevice corrosion (MACC). The role of materials on MACC of acetabular tapers has not been previously studied. In vitro tests of seating, pushout, and fretting corrosion performance of acetabular tapers are presented to assess the role of material combinations (Ti-6Al-4V shells, HC CoCrMo, LC CoCrMo, and 316L SS liners).

Previous pneumococcal experience establishes lung-resident IL-17A-producing CD4 memory T cells that accelerate neutrophil recruitment against heterotypic pneumococci. Herein, we unravel a novel crosstalk between CD4 T cells and lung epithelial cells underlying this protective immunity. Depletion of CD4 cells in pneumococcus-experienced mice diminished CXCL5 (but not CXCL1 or CXCL2) and downstream neutrophil accumulation in the lungs.

Background: Recent advances in radiation technology has allowed to significantly reduce toxicity and improve the efficacy of radical radiotherapy in head and neck and oral squamous cell cancers. Insights into molecular biology of carcinogenesis has opened a window for identifying aggressive clinical situations that may benefit with larger clinical target volume (CTV ) margin, broader levels of nodal coverage, or alternative radiation sensitizers.

Aim: To evaluate the potential role of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (elF4E) and p53 as predictive biomarkers in resected margins of head and neck and oral cancers.

Citrobacter rodentium is an extracellular enteric mouse-specific pathogen used to model infections with human pathogenic Escherichia coli and inflammatory bowel disease. C. rodentium injects type III secretion system effectors into intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) to target inflammatory, metabolic and cell survival pathways and establish infection.

Purpose: Current radiation oncology patient education materials exceed national readability recommendations. A graphic narrative educational tool, the Communicating the External Beam Radiation Experience (CEBRE) discussion guide, was developed to facilitate patient-provider communication. A pilot study evaluated perceived benefits of CEBRE for patients and physicians.

Immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, yet most patients do not respond. Here, we investigated mechanisms of response by profiling the proteome of clinical samples from advanced stage melanoma patients undergoing either tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL)-based or anti- programmed death 1 (PD1) immunotherapy. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry, we quantified over 10,300 proteins in total and ∼4,500 proteins across most samples in each dataset.

Background: Accelerated induction regimens of infliximab have been proposed to improve response rates in patients with steroid-refractory acute severe colitis.

Aim: To determine the differences in outcome for acute severe ulcerative colitis between accelerated and standard-dose infliximab METHODS: We collected data on hospitalised patients receiving differing regimens of rescue therapy for steroid-refractory acute severe ulcerative colitis. Our primary outcome was 30-day colectomy rate.
