Purpose: To determine the risk factors for pulmonary complications after minimally invasive surgery in elderly patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs).

Methods: A total of 233 elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years) with VCFs, who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) or percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) surgery at Hebei General Hospital from January 2011 to December 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. Risk factors and the effects of the model were determined by univariate logistic regression analyses and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, respectively.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that mostly strikes the elderly. However, the exact molecular and cellular pathogenesis of AD, especially the dynamic changes of neurons during disease progression, remains poorly understood. Here we used single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) to access the transcriptional changes of hippocampal neurons in APP23 mouse model of AD.

Autophagy is a conserved intracellular degradation system that plays a dual role in cell death; thus, therapies targeting autophagy in cancer are somewhat controversial. Ferroptosis is a new form of regulated cell death featured with the iron-dependent accumulation of lethal lipid ROS. This pathway is morphologically, biochemically and genetically distinct from other forms of cell death.

A stable and enzyme-free method is described for highly sensitive determination of telomerase activity. It is based on the use of a framework nucleic acid (FNA) nanomachine and doxorubicin-spherical nucleic acid (DSNA) tags. Upon incubation with telomerase, the primer-tetrahedron becomes elongated to form the handed swing arm.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between quantitative T2 mapping-based tendon healing and clinical outcomes during the first year after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

Methods: Twenty-two patients with rotator cuff tear were prospectively recruited. Serial clinical and MRI follow-up assessments were carried out at 1 month, 6 months and 12 months after surgery.

Background: To compare the clinical efficacy and radiographic analysis of oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) and traditional posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) in treating degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS).

Methods: Grade I DLS patients admitted to the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University were retrospectively reviewed. In sum, 78 patients that underwent OLIF (n = 31) and PLIF (n = 47) treatment of DLS were recruited.

A novel chitosan derivative, O-acrylamidomethyl-N-[(2-hydroxy-3- dimethyldodecylammonium) propyl] chitosan chloride (NMA-HDCC), was synthesized by reacting chitosan (CTS) with epoxypropyl dodecyl dimethyl quaternary ammonium salt and N-methylolacryl amide (NMA). The chemical structure of the quaternized chitosan was analyzed by FTIR and NMR. The water soluble derivative can form covalent bonding with cellulosic fibers and bring quaternary salt groups onto the fibers.

Objective: This retrospective study was performed to investigate the risk factors for axial symptoms (AS) after single-segment anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF).

Methods: One hundred thirteen patients with cervical spondylosis who had undergone single-segment ACDF from January 2012 to December 2015 were divided into those with and without AS (n = 34 and n = 79, respectively). Clinical data and radiological evaluation results were recorded.

The plant economics spectrum proposes that ecological traits are functionally coordinated and adapt along environmental gradients. However, empirical evidence is mixed about whether aboveground and root traits are consistently linked and which environmental factors drive functional responses. Here we measure the strength of relationships between aboveground and root traits, and examine whether community-weighted mean trait values are adapted along gradients of light and soil fertility, based on the seedling censuses of 57 species in a subtropical forest.

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging is a novel contrast mechanism, relying on the exchange between mobile protons in amide (-NH), amine (-NH) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups and bulk water. Due to the targeted protons present in endogenous molecules or exogenous compounds applied externally, CEST imaging can respectively, generate endogenous or exogenous contrast. Nowadays, CEST imaging for endogenous contrast has been explored in pre-clinical and clinical studies.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for poor outcome in patients who underwent multi-segmental anterior surgery, and analyze postoperative complications.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 158 patients after anterior surgery due to multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy (m-CSM) between June 2008 and June 2016. Adjusted ORs and 95% CIs were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis.

To compare imaging indicators and clinical effects of extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) using allogenic bone, autologous bone marrow + allogenic bone, and rhBMP-2 + allogenic bone as bone graft materials in the treatment of degenerative lumbar diseases. This was a retrospective study of 93 patients with lumbar interbody fusion who underwent the extreme lateral approach from May 2016 to December 2017. According to the different bone graft materials, patients were divided into allogenic bone groups (group A, 31 cases), rhBMP-2 + allogenic bone (group B, 32 cases), and autologous bone marrow + allogenic bone (group C, 30 cases).

Benefits and risks were reported for hormone therapy (HT) to prevent chronic disease, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) found no protective effect of HT on the cognitive function of women whose treatment was initiated far past the onset of menopause, other studies showed reduced risk of AD with midlife treatment, versus increased risk of AD with late treatment. These suggest a critical window during which estradiol must be administered to prevent cognitive decline and AD in women.

The competition-colonization trade-off, by which species can partition spatial niches, is a potentially important mechanism allowing the maintenance of species diversity in plant communities. We examined whether there was evidence for this trade-off among tree species in a subtropical forest and how it correlated with eight functional traits. We developed and estimated a metric for colonization ability that incorporates both fecundity and seed dispersal based on seed trap data and the sizes and distributions of adult trees.

Background: At present, much is unknown about the etiology and pathogenesis of ULDH. However, it is interesting to note that many ULDH patients have a radiographic feature of adjacent vertebral wedge deformation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between symptomatic upper lumbar disc herniation (ULDH) and wedge-shaped vertebrae (WSV).

It has been reported that microplastics (MPs) have strong affinity for hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) and can be ingested accidentally by aquatic organisms, posing a potential threat to the environment. To date, the sorption data used in modelling to clarify the mechanism were mostly obtained in varied sampling durations and regions from different works, which might cause inevitable deviation in modelling results. The current study aimed to illustrate the sorption properties of HOCs to the micro-sized polystyrene (PS).
