Objective: To evaluate the association between the BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) coronavirus disease vaccine and new-onset anterior uveitis.

Methods: A retrospective case control study of patients admitted and diagnosed with new-onset acute anterior uveitis, and matched controls admitted for other reasons (1:3 ratio), was completed. Rates of exposure to the BNT162b2 vaccine were compared between groups, and odds ratios for exposure to the vaccine were calculated.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study analyzed 22 patients with these fungal infections over four years, finding that 46.2% had terbinafine-resistant strains, with a significant number identified as T. indotineae.
  • * Treatment responses varied; only a few patients improved with alternatives like itraconazole or voriconazole, indicating a challenge in managing these resistant infections.

Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of several intraocular lens (IOL) formulas for patients with endothelial dystrophy (ED) without edema treated with cataract surgery alone.

Setting: 1 academic, tertiary referral center.

Design: Comparative retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: To evaluate and quantify variation of biometric parameters - axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT) and white-to-white (WTW).

Methods: A population-based retrospective cohort study was performed on patients who underwent a biometry test prior to cataract surgery using the IOL Master 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) between the years 2017-2021. Differences in these parameters were evaluated between scans executed at different times of the day.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes Mellitus (DM) leads to serious complications such as diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and diabetic foot infections (DFI), increasing the risk of limb amputation and death.
  • * Superficial fungal infections like tinea pedis and onychomycosis heighten the risk of DFU and DFI in diabetic patients.
  • * The article emphasizes the importance of dermatologists in a multidisciplinary team to screen and manage these fungal infections, aiming to mitigate complications associated with diabetic foot health.

Purpose: To compare the outcomes of anterior chamber intraocular lens (AC-IOL) implantation versus the four-flanged scleral fixation technique in eyes with loss of capsular support during routine cataract surgery.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients in whom an IOL was implanted either during or after short-term aphakia due to loss of capsular and sulcus support in a routine cataract surgery with at least 6 months of follow-up time between 2015 and 2023 in a tertiary medical center in Israel. Two different IOL implantation techniques were compared: the implantation of an angle-supported ACIOL and four-flanged scleral fixation.

Introduction: Terbinafine is considered the gold standard for treating skin fungal infections and onychomycosis. However, recent reports suggest that dermatophytes are developing resistance to terbinafine and the other traditional antifungal agents, itraconazole and fluconazole. When there is resistance to terbinafine, itraconazole or fluconazole, or when these agents cannot used, for example, due to potential drug interactions with the patient's current medications, clinicians may need to consider off-label use of new generation azoles, such as voriconazole, posaconazole, fosravuconazole, or oteseconazole.

Introduction: The importance of myopia management lies in the desire to minimize the potential ocular risks that increase with high myopia.

Aims: To assess the decrease in myopia progression using topical low dose atropine combined with peripheral blur contact lenses (CL).

Methods: This retrospective review study included 25 children between the ages of 8.

Purpose: To measure and compare the inter-examiner reproducibility of manifest refraction in patients with keratoconus.

Design: Prospective, inter-examiner reliability analysis comparing cases and controls.

Methods: Patients with keratoconus (KC) and healthy subjects had undergone manifest refraction by the same 2 skilled optometrists; each was masked to the refraction of the other, on the same day.

Individuals with psoriatic nails often have a lower quality of life relative to their counterparts with healthy nails. Methotrexate (MTX), an anti-neoplastic agent, is a longstanding treatment option for nail psoriasis. In the current study, we compared the effects of MTX to that of a corticosteroid, namely, methylprednisolone acetate (i.

  • Low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) shows good safety and effectiveness for treating hair loss conditions like male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and female-pattern hair loss (FPHL), but it hasn’t received FDA approval yet.
  • The typical starting dose is 1-5 mg/day for males and 0.5-1 mg/day for females, with a max dose of 5 mg/day; patients can increase doses if they respond well without significant side effects.
  • Common side effects include unwanted hair growth and cardiovascular issues, with women being more susceptible to unwanted hair growth; LDOM's ability to treat hair loss may provide a new option for patients given the limited existing therapies.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the differences between adult-onset atopic dermatitis (AOAD) and pediatric-onset atopic dermatitis persisting into adulthood (POAD), focusing on their unique characteristics to aid in targeted therapy development.
  • Skin biopsies and blood samples from adults with AOAD, POAD, and healthy controls were analyzed using various techniques, revealing distinct immune responses and dysregulations in both conditions.
  • Results indicated that while POAD showed more severe inflammation and epidermal barrier issues, AOAD had different immune marker expressions and a greater number of dysregulated proteins in serum, suggesting the need for diverse therapeutic strategies that go beyond just targeting Th2 pathways.
