Purpose Of Review: The role of the lymphatic system in clearing extravasated fluids, lipid transport, and immune surveillance is well established, and lymphatic vasculature can provide a vital role in facilitating crosstalk among various organ systems. Lymphatic vessels rely on intrinsic and local factors to absorb and propel lymph from the interstitium back to the systemic circulation. The biological implications of local influences on lymphatic vessels are underscored by the exquisite sensitivity of these vessels to environmental stimuli.

Background: Women make up only 23% to 30% of recipients for deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson's disease (PD), a discrepancy that is not accounted for by differences in disease incidence. One of the many factors that may contribute to this gap includes gender differences in decision-making.

Objective: The aim was to explore how women and men approach the decision for DBS in terms of informational needs, weighing risks and benefits, and decision-making.

Background: Lymphatic collecting vessels in the kidney are critical in clearing interstitial fluid, macromolecules, and infiltrating immune cells. Dysfunction of the lymphatic vessels can disrupt this process and exacerbate injury-associated inflammation in many disease conditions. We previously found that sodium accumulates within the kidney interstitium during proteinuric kidney injury and elevated sodium environments stimulate isolevuglandin production in antigen-presenting cells, stimulating T cells, and modulating inflammatory responses.

Many endosymbionts of insects have been shown to manipulate and alter their hosts' reproduction with implications for agriculture, disease transmission, and ecological systems. Less studied are the microbiota of classical biological control agents and the implications of inadvertent endosymbionts in laboratory colonies for field establishment and effects on target pests or nontarget organisms. While native-range field populations of agents may have a low incidence of vertically transmitted endosymbionts, quarantine and laboratory rearing of inbred populations may increase this low prevalence to fixation in relatively few generations.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical dystonia (CD) is a common neurological condition, with about one-third of patients also experiencing tremors in their head and hands, complicating diagnosis and treatment.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 3,100 CD patients across various continents using machine learning to identify clinical features predicting the presence and nature of neck tremor.
  • Key findings revealed that increased severity of CD, longer disease duration, and older age were strong predictors of neck tremor, with notable differences in tremor characteristics based on gender and the involvement of other body parts.

This study explored the use of transperineal intestinal ultrasound (TPIUS) for assessment of ulcerative colitis (UC) in pregnancy. 8 pregnant women with UC underwent TP-US, clinical assessment and fecal calprotectin. TP-IUS was well tolerated and feasible with adequate rectal views obtained in all trimesters of pregnancy.

Premature infants are often exposed to hyperoxia. However, there is limited data regarding the mechanistic underpinnings linking neonatal hyperoxia exposure and its contribution to cardio-renal dysfunction in adults born preterm. Our objective was to determine whether neonatal hyperoxia induces systemic vascular stiffness and cardio-renal dysfunction in adulthood.

Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) is a driver of embryonic patterning that, when corrupted, triggers developmental disorders and cancers. SHH effector responses are organized through primary cilia (PC) that grow and retract with the cell cycle and in response to extracellular cues. Disruption of PC homeostasis corrupts SHH regulation, placing significant pressure on the pathway to maintain ciliary fitness.

Objectives: To describe the diagnostic tests used and their comparative performance in dogs diagnosed with sinonasal aspergillosis in the United Kingdom. A secondary objective was to describe the signalment, clinical findings and common clinicopathologic abnormalities in sinonasal aspergillosis.

Materials And Methods: A multi-centre retrospective survey was performed involving 23 referral centres in the United Kingdom to identify dogs diagnosed with sinonasal aspergillosis from January 2011 to December 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are studying how certain areas in the body called signalling centres help organs grow during the early stages of development.
  • They found that in rodent teeth, a key signalling centre called the enamel knot is formed because of pressure created by cells multiplying.
  • By changing cell growth or applying pressure, they learned that this mechanical stress is important for the formation of the enamel knot, which helps dictate how teeth develop.

Objectives: Dermal regeneration templates (DRTs) are frequently used to treat scalp defects. The aim was to compare the time course of healing for DRTs in scalp defects with and without preoperative radiation.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of DRT-based scalp reconstruction at 2 academic medical centers between 2013 and 2022.

Introduction: This study tested whether multiple traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) alter the structure of the Henle fiber layer (HFL) and degrade cell-specific function in the retinas of human participants.

Methods: A cohort of case participants with multiple TBIs and a cohort of pair-matched control participants were prospectively recruited. Directional optical coherence tomography and scanning laser polarimetry measured HFL thickness and phase retardation, respectively.

Vascular smooth muscle K channels critically regulate blood flow and blood pressure by modulating vascular tone and therefore represent attractive drug targets for treating several cardiovascular disorders. However, the lack of potent inhibitors that can selectively inhibit Kir6.1/SUR2B (vascular K) over Kir6.

The ductus arteriosus (DA) is a vascular shunt that allows oxygenated blood to bypass the developing lungs in utero. Fetal DA patency requires vasodilatory signaling via the prostaglandin E (PGE) receptor EP. However, in humans and mice, disrupted PGE-EP signaling in utero causes unexpected patency of the DA (PDA) after birth, suggesting another role for EP during development.

Kidney disease is associated with adverse consequences in many organs beyond the kidney, including the heart, lungs, brain, and intestines. The kidney-intestinal cross talk involves intestinal epithelial damage, dysbiosis, and generation of uremic toxins. Recent studies reveal that kidney injury expands the intestinal lymphatics, increases lymphatic flow, and alters the composition of mesenteric lymph.

Introduction: A mission-critical aspect of learning health systems (LHSs) is the provision of evidence-based practice. One source of such evidence is provided by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) through rigorous systematic reviews, termed evidence reports that synthesize available evidence on nominated topics of interest. However, the AHRQ Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) program recognizes that the production of high-quality evidence reviews does not guarantee or promote their use and usability in practice.

Hyperlactatemia often occurs in critically ill patients during severe sepsis/septic shock and is a powerful predictor of mortality. Lactate is the end product of glycolysis. While hypoxia due to inadequate oxygen delivery may result in anaerobic glycolysis, sepsis also enhances glycolysis under hyperdynamic circulation with adequate oxygen delivery.

Based upon our demonstration that the smooth muscle cell-selective (SMC-selective) putative methyltransferase, Prdm6, interacts with myocardin-related transcription factor-A, we examined Prdm6's role in SMCs in vivo using cell type-specific knockout mouse models. Although SMC-specific depletion of Prdm6 in adult mice was well tolerated, Prdm6 depletion in Wnt1-expressing cells during development resulted in perinatal lethality and a completely penetrant patent ductus arteriosus (DA) phenotype. Lineage tracing experiments in Wnt1Cre2 Prdm6fl/fl ROSA26LacZ mice revealed normal neural crest-derived SMC investment of the outflow tract.
