Use of a factor analysis to assess biomechanical factors of American Sign Language in native and non-native signers.

Prior studies suggest that native (born to at least one deaf or signing parent) and non-native signers have different musculoskeletal health outcomes from signing, but the individual and combined biomechanical factors driving these differences are not fully understood. Such group differences in signing may be explained by the five biomechanical factors of American Sign Language that have been previously identified: ballistic signing, hand and wrist deviations, work envelope, muscle tension, and "micro" rests. Prior work used motion capture and surface electromyography to collect joint kinematics and muscle activations, respectively, from ten native and thirteen non-native signers as they signed for 7.

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: A Case Study Presentation.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition. This article presents a case study of AIHA in a patient with a history of acute myelogenous leukemia in remission. Differentiating the cause and type of HA (extrinsic versus intrinsic) will be discussed, along with information on follow-up and refractory AIHA.

Safety of air medical transport of patients with COVID-19 by personnel using routine personal protective equipment.

Objective: Air medical transport of patients with known or suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) likely represents a high-risk exposure to crew members as aircraft cabins are quite small resulting in close personal contact. The actual risk to medical crew members is not known.

Methods: We conducted an institutional review board-exempt, retrospective study of air medical transport of patients with known or suspected COVID-19 by 8 programs in the Four Corners Region to determine the number of symptomatic COVID-19 among air medical crew members compared to total exposure time.

Mayo Clinic Hematology Fellowship for Advanced Practice Providers.

Advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs), are part of a growing cancer care workforce. Current hematology-specific education provided by most graduate NP and PA school educations is limited. Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences launched a hematology-specific fellowship in 2018 to provide APPs with the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality specialty care in hematology and blood and marrow transplant (BMT).

Parental perspectives of functioning in their children with autism spectrum disorder: A global scoping review.

No paper to date has summarized parents' views on the functional challenges and/or strengths of their children with autism spectrum disorder. In this review we set out to perform a scoping review aiming to (a) find and compare existing research from around the globe on parental perception of functioning and (b) summarize results from these papers using the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health-Child and Youth version framework. Since we know that the place and circumstances we live in can have a significant influence on our functioning in daily life, we were specifically interested in comparing perceptions from high-income countries and low-/middle-income countries.

Lyme disease and anaplasmosis are tick-borne bacterial diseases caused by and species, respectively. A comprehensive analysis of the exposure of eastern coyotes () in the northeastern United States to tick-borne pathogens has not been conducted. In this report, we assess the serological status of 128 eastern coyotes harvested in Pennsylvania in 2015 and 2017 for antibodies to and Immunoblot and dot blot approaches were employed to test each plasma sample by using cell lysates and recombinant proteins as detection antigens.

Assessment of the Need for a Hematology-Specific Fellowship Curriculum for Advanced Practice Providers Using a Needs-Based Survey.

Purpose: Subspecialty training programs rarely are available for advanced practice providers (APPs). New curricula are needed to prepare APPs with the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality care in hematology and blood and marrow transplantation (BMT).

Methods: A Web-based needs assessment survey was distributed to APPs currently working in hematology and BMT at three Mayo Clinic sites (Rochester, MN; Scottsdale, AZ; and Jacksonville, FL).

Background: Methamphetamine psychosis (MAP) symptomatology has been described as indistinguishable from that of schizophrenia (SZ), yet research comparing these two disorders on specific psychotic symptoms such as schneiderian first-rank symptoms (FRS) is lacking. We aimed to determine and compare the occurrence and associations of FRS in patients diagnosed with MAP and with SZ.

Purpose: Choosing poor-quality foods in school cafeterias is a risk factor for childhood obesity. Given the option, children often select chocolate milk over plain white milk. Efforts to increase plain white milk selection, such as banning chocolate milk in school cafeterias, increases plain white fat-free milk (PWFFM) purchase but decreases the overall milk purchase.

Characterisation of a novel Fc conjugate of macrophage colony-stimulating factor.

We have produced an Fc conjugate of colony-stimulating factor (CSF) 1 with an improved circulating half-life. CSF1-Fc retained its macrophage growth-promoting activity, and did not induce proinflammatory cytokines in vitro. Treatment with CSF1-Fc did not produce adverse effects in mice or pigs.

The effect of photobiomodulation on root resorption during orthodontic treatment.

Photobiomodulation is used to accelerate tooth movement during orthodontic treatments. The changes in root morphology in a group of orthodontic patients who received photobiomodulation were evaluated using the cone beam computed tomography technique. The device used is called OrthoPulse, which produces low levels of light with a near infrared wavelength of 850 nm and an intensity of 60 mW/cm(2) continuous wave.

Comparative functional characterization of canine IgG subclasses.

To date, very little is known about the functional characteristics of the four published canine IgG subclasses. It is not clear how each subclass engages the immune system via complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) or antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), or how long each antibody may last in serum. Such information is critical for understanding canine immunology and for the discovery of canine therapeutic monoclonal antibodies.

Interleukin-31: its role in canine pruritus and naturally occurring canine atopic dermatitis.

Background: Interleukin-31 (IL-31) is a member of the gp130/interleukin-6 cytokine family that is produced by cell types such as T helper 2 lymphocytes and cutaneous lymphocyte antigen positive skin homing T cells. When overexpressed in transgenic mice, IL-31 induces severe pruritus, alopecia and skin lesions. In humans, IL-31 serum levels correlate with the severity of atopic dermatitis in adults and children.

Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (CSF-1) controls the survival, differentiation and proliferation of cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system. A second ligand for the CSF-1R, Interleukin 34 (IL-34), has been described, but its physiological role is not yet known. The domestic pig provides an alternative to traditional rodent models for evaluating potential therapeutic applications of CSF-1R agonists and antagonists.

Background: Substance abuse and addiction are growing public health problems. Pharmacists are potentially in a position to be of great assistance in ameliorating these threats yet might not be receiving the education and training to do so effectively.

A Comparative Look at the Safety Profiles of Intravenous Iron Products Used in the Hemodialysis Population.

Objective: To review clinical trials conducted in hemodialysis patients of the 4 intravenous iron products available in the US in an attempt to discern strengths and inferiorities between products and evaluate current safety data that can be used to assist the clinician in selecting the most appropriate agent.

Data Sources: Literature was accessed through PubMed (January 2000-October 2010). In some cases, reference citations from selected review articles were evaluated as well.

Studies of the attractiveness of female bodies have focussed strongly on the waist, hips and bust, but sexual selection operates on whole phenotypes rather than the relative proportions of just two or three body parts. Here, we use body scanners to extract computer-generated images of 96 Chinese women's bodies with all traits unrelated to body shape removed. We first show that Chinese and Australian men and women rate the attractiveness of these bodies the same.

A class of selective antibacterials derived from a protein kinase inhibitor pharmacophore.

As the need for novel antibiotic classes to combat bacterial drug resistance increases, the paucity of leads resulting from target-based antibacterial screening of pharmaceutical compound libraries is of major concern. One explanation for this lack of success is that antibacterial screening efforts have not leveraged the eukaryotic bias resulting from more extensive chemistry efforts targeting eukaryotic gene families such as G protein-coupled receptors and protein kinases. Consistent with a focus on antibacterial target space resembling these eukaryotic targets, we used whole-cell screening to identify a series of antibacterial pyridopyrimidines derived from a protein kinase inhibitor pharmacophore.

6-Shogaol reduced chronic inflammatory response in the knees of rats treated with complete Freund's adjuvant.

Background: 6-Shogaol is one of the major compounds in the ginger rhizome that may contribute to its anti-inflammatory properties. Confirmation of this contribution was sought in this study in Sprague- Dawley rats (200-250 g) treated with a single injection (0.5 ml of 1 mg/ml) of a commercial preparation of complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) to induce monoarthritis in the right knee over a period of 28 days.
