To improve outcomes for patients with cancer, in terms of both survival and a reduction in the morbidity and mortality that results from surgical resection and treatment, there are two main areas that require improvement. Accurate early diagnosis of the cancer, at a stage where curative and, ideally, minimally invasive treatment is achievable, is desired as well as identification of tumor margins, lymphatic and distant disease, enabling complete, but not unnecessarily extensive, resection. Optical imaging is making progress in achieving these aims.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed data from 589 patients who underwent lower-limb surgeries, focusing on age, BMI, and other health issues.
  • Results showed that higher BMI and older age are linked to longer hospital stays and increased surgery time, with specific percentages calculated for each factor.
  • The findings highlight that the current reimbursement system does not adequately cover the financial impact of these variables, leading to the creation of a predictive chart for hospital stay lengths based on BMI and age.

Background: Survivors of sexual violence have high rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although treatment for symptoms related to sexual violence has been shown to be effective in high-income countries, evidence is lacking in low-income, conflict-affected countries.

Methods: In this trial in the Democratic Republic of Congo, we randomly assigned 16 villages to provide cognitive processing therapy (1 individual session and 11 group sessions) or individual support to female sexual-violence survivors with high levels of PTSD symptoms and combined depression and anxiety symptoms.
