Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is an increasingly common cutaneous viral infection that primarily affects the pediatric population. MC lesions are benign, and most cases resolve within 6-9 months. Nonetheless, many patients and their parents seek active treatment of MC because of local pain, pruritus, embarrassment due to the lesions, or desire to reduce transmission to siblings.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease that is generally managed on an outpatient basis. However, a significant percentage of patients may develop complications severe enough to require inpatient treatment. The most common complications of AD that may require hospital admission include erythroderma, eczema herpeticum, and systemic bacterial infection.

Interest in cosmetic improvement as a marker for tanning behavior: a survey of 1602 respondents.

Dermatologists see many patients interested in improving their physical appearance through cosmetic procedures or medical means. Dermatologists frequently counsel patients on sun protection as well, particularly those with a personal or family history of skin cancer, sun-sensitive dermatoses or those with obvious sun damage. Our objective in this study was to identify novel markers of skin cancer risk, which may aid dermatologists in targeting extra sun protection counseling for certain groups.

Parental satisfaction, efficacy, and adverse events in 54 patients treated with cantharidin for molluscum contagiosum infection.

Objective: To study the efficacy, tolerability, and parental satisfaction of cantharidin in a patient population at a pediatric dermatology referral center.

Methods: Chart review was completed for 110 patients who presented with molluscum infection and were treated with cantharidin. A total of 54 were available for follow-up by telephone interview regarding adverse effects, parental satisfaction, and overall clearance of the infection.

Self-treatment with bleach by a Latino farmworker.

Skin disease is common among migrant Latino farmworkers. These workers rarely use formal health care services but commonly engage in self-treatment of their skin disease. We present a patient with dermatitis who self-treated with bleach.

Vitiligo as a post-bone marrow transplantation complication.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which T cells recognize and destroy melanocytes. We present a case of a 20-year-old male who developed generalized vitiligo 4 years after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for Fanconi anemia. Although other autoimmune conditions have been well characterized as post-BMT complications, vitiligo is very rare.
