Article Synopsis
  • Telehealth interventions are important for aiding patients with chronic conditions like heart failure and type 2 diabetes by improving health outcomes through structured conversations about lifestyle management.
  • This study analyzed 729 telehealth calls made over a year to 50 heart failure patients, focusing specifically on lifestyle management topics and how these discussions related to their healthcare usage.
  • The research assessed the content and structure of lifestyle-focused calls compared to those not solely about lifestyle, while also evaluating the nurses’ perspectives on the effectiveness and follow-up needed for these calls, ultimately relating them to patient admissions in the healthcare system.

Article Synopsis
  • - Multiple recent articles emphasize the need for outcomes-based and patient-centered guidelines in periodontal therapy.
  • - The authors argue that periodontal treatment should be grounded in evidence-based practices that prioritize the patient's best interests.
  • - They suggest that many patients with periodontal disease are not receiving adequate and timely care for their condition.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) in Asian populations, comparing it to heart failure patients with reduced (HFrEF) and preserved (HFpEF) ejection fractions.
  • The research analyzed data from 16,493 patients admitted for heart failure from 2008 to 2014, focusing on characteristics like gender, age, and comorbidities, alongside all-cause mortality and hospitalizations up to December 2016.
  • Findings reveal that HFmrEF patients have a lower mortality rate compared to HFrEF but a higher rate than HFpEF, indicating a unique clinical profile for HFmrEF, which sits between the two other types in terms of health outcomes

Article Synopsis
  • * A review of literature indicates that calculus is a significant risk factor for periodontal inflammation, potentially causing issues beyond just biofilm retention.
  • * The findings emphasize that failure to properly remove calculus contributes to the poor outcomes of non-surgical periodontal treatments aimed at reducing inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how sex and diabetes mellitus (DM) affect Asian patients with heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF), a condition where the heart's pumping ability is slightly impaired.
  • It included 2,272 patients from 2008 to 2014, finding that more women had DM and differed in clinical characteristics compared to men, such as being older and having less coronary artery disease.
  • While diabetes negatively impacted overall survival for both sexes, it was found to have a stronger association with adverse outcomes in women, emphasizing the need for tailored management approaches based on sex.

Introduction: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events. However, treatment of PA has not been shown to improve left ventricular (LV) systolic function using the conventional assessment with LV ejection fraction (LVEF). We aim to use speckle-tracking echocardiography to assess for improvement in subclinical systolic function after treatment of PA.

Article Synopsis
  • The lack of clear treatment guidelines for periodontitis can create challenges for both dental professionals and patients.
  • Researchers reviewed existing studies and established basic decision points for treating periodontitis, aligned with the 2018 classification of the disease.
  • Recommended treatments include self-care, the removal of harmful bacteria, professional cleaning of plaque and calculus, and, for severe cases, potential surgical options and tissue regeneration.

Background: In addition to increased cardiovascular risk, patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) also suffer from impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological symptoms. We assessed for changes in HRQoL and depressive symptoms in a cohort of Asian patients with PA, after surgical and medical therapy.

Methods: Thirty-four patients with PA were prospectively recruited and completed questionnaires from 2017 to 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involved 150 HF patients using streaming data from telemonitored vital signs and patient profiles to create a neural network model aimed at predicting 30-day readmission risks.
  • * The model shows promising results with over 71% sensitivity and 75% specificity, allowing for early identification of high-risk patients, which can improve resource allocation in care management.

Aims: Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is a common problem of great morbidity and mortality. Hydralazine-isosorbide dinitrate (H-ISDN) may be used in renal failure and may improve exercise capacity in heart failure (HF). Our proof-of-concept study aimed to evaluate early evidence of efficacy, safety, and feasibility of H-ISDN compared with standard of care in CRS.

Aims: Our study aimed to compare the effectiveness of telemonitoring over structured telephone support in reducing heart failure-related healthcare utilization.

Methods: This was a non-randomised controlled study comparing 150 recently discharged heart failure patients enrolled into telemonitoring and 55 patients who only received structured telephone support after rejecting telemonitoring. Patient activation, knowledge and self-management levels were measured at baseline and the one year upon programme completion using the Patient Activation Measure, the Dutch Heart Failure Knowledge Scale and the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) at Changi General Hospital in Singapore over two years.
  • It analyzed data from 679 patients, finding a negative predictive value of 85.7% and a positive predictive value of 86.2%, indicating the reliability of CCTA results.
  • The study concluded that negative CCTA results were associated with a one-year period without major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), aligning with existing clinical data.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study identifies limited but effective 30-day heart failure (HF) readmission risk scores using common clinical data from a specific HF patient population, analyzing 1,475 admissions between 2010 and 2012.
  • - Seven key factors were found to predict 30-day HF readmissions, including previous admissions, length of hospital stay, serum creatinine, and certain medication use at discharge.
  • - The developed risk scoring tool demonstrated solid accuracy, with a sensitivity of 78.3% and a negative predictive value of 96%, making it a valuable tool for predicting readmissions in a diverse urban heart failure cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare the characteristics and outcomes of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) among a Southeast Asian population, focusing on 1,978 patients from a hospital in Singapore.
  • Approximately 29% of patients had HFpEF, who were generally older, more likely to be women, and had a higher prevalence of hypertension, yet both groups had similar 30-day outcomes and 1-year mortality rates (17% for HFrEF and 15% for HFpEF).
  • Atrial fibrillation was found to significantly predict death or hospitalization in patients with HFpEF but not in those with HFrEF, indicating that while profiles

Carbon dioxide (CO ) has shown promise as a tool to control movements of invasive Asian carp, but its effects on native freshwater biota have not been well studied. The authors evaluated lethal and sublethal responses of juvenile fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea) mussels to CO at levels (43-269 mg/L, mean concentration) that bracket concentrations effective for deterring carp movement. The 28-d lethal concentration to 50% of the mussels was 87.

Introduction: The use of non-fluoroscopic systems (NFS) to guide radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) for the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is associated with lower radiation exposure. This study aimed to determine if NFS reduces fluoroscopy time, radiation dose and procedure time.

Methods: We prospectively enrolled patients undergoing RFCA for SVT.
