Chronic kidney disease leads to various complications, including anemia, cardiovascular complications, salt and water retention, metabolic acidosis, electrolyte disorders, and chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), amongst which CKD-MBD is a particularly important complication that develops early.
Materials And Methods: In the present study, various biochemical analytes were assessed for their significance in monitoring the CKD-MBD in different stages of CKD.
Background: People live longer, and frailty has become an important problem in the acute hospital setting. Increasingly the association between frailty and hospital-acquired complications has been reported. However, the overall burden of frailty in this setting has not been described.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Hypertension (HTN) has a genetic predisposition and it also impairs microcirculation, thereby, affecting the well vascularized structures like the brainstem and causing changes in Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEPs).
Purpose: To find out the usefulness of BAEPs as a screening tool in apparently healthy individuals with a family history of HTN.
Methods: One hundred and ten volunteers, aged 17 to 23 years, were enrolled in the study as participants with proper consent.
Background: In the development and progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus, β-cell dysfunction occurs after insulin resistance. Despite poor glycaemic control, there is a practice of increasing the dose of oral anti-diabetics or adding more drugs to the regimen due to the common perception that low endogenous insulin secretion is related to type 1 diabetes mellitus only and patient's poor compliance to injectables. Keeping this perspective in mind, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of beta cell dysfunction by low serum C-peptide levels and its correlation with poor glycaemic control.

Analysis of peoples' language use in a large corpus of organizational emails using standardized Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) measures shows a systematic difference in the use of words with potentially sensitive (ethnic, religious, or political) connotations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCase: A 29-year-old young active man with ununited necrosed proximal fifth of scaphoid with chronic scapholunate ligament disruption was managed by excision of proximal pole fragment and interosseous scapholunate reconstruction using modified Brunelli triple ligament tenodesis technique with satisfying outcome at 6 months and return to sports instructor job by the end of 1 year.
Conclusion: Meticulous understanding and algorithmic itemwise approach of injury components can lead to optimal management of complex unstable wrist injuries such as scapholunate dissociation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on excision of proximal pole of scaphoid coupled with scapholunate ligament reconstruction.
In early 2022, as the vaccination rate in South Africa slowed, there was a strong need for COVID-19 communications to evolve from mass information and education campaigns targeting the general population, to more targeted approaches to motivate uptake amongst population segments facing convenience, complacency, and confidence barriers.Project Last Mile (PLM) and Ipsos conducted a representative study of the population of South Africa to: (1) understand population segments with regards to their likelihood of getting the COVID-19 vaccine, (2) understand the drivers and barriers around getting the COVID-19 vaccine for each segment; and (3) test the likelihood of adoption of a range of enabling, incentivizing, and mandating behavioral interventions ("nudges and shoves").The study demonstrated that a significant proportion of the unvaccinated population is willing to get vaccinated, given the right conditions.

The "July effect"-described as increased complication rates during the transition of new trainees-has been studied in other procedures, but has not been thoroughly evaluated for EGD.
Methods: We used the National Inpatient Sample database for 2016 to 2018 to compare outcomes in EGD performed between July to September and April to June.
PTS (pneumatic transport system) is extensively being used in modern hospitals for rapid transportation of blood samples and other specimens. However, it has a potential impact on blood components, which should be investigated and nullified accordingly. This study was part of a correction program aimed at reducing hemolysis.
