Paediatric rheumatology is an exciting field exploding with new knowledge of autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions and how to treat them. It is, however, a relatively new subspecialisation in Asia. There is thus a great need to educate the public and medical community about paediatric rheumatic diseases so that children with such conditions are given the highest possibility of achieving normal function in their daily lives.

Background: Eczema is a known risk factor for the development of wheeze in childhood. Cord blood T-cell cytokine responses have been shown to be associated with the development of both early childhood eczema and wheeze. Our objective is to study and compare the influence of intrinsic T-cell cytokine responses on the development of wheezing and eczema in the first 2 years of life in a birth cohort of at risk (first degree family with atopic disease) infants.

The prevalence of food allergy has increased exponentially in the last decade and is fast becoming the second wave of the allergy epidemic. Secondary prevention methods such as treatment of accidental exposures and immunotherapy are still fraught with difficulties and unanticipated adverse events still occur. The future of food allergy management may lie in primary prevention, of which practical strategies and current evidence are summarized in this review.

Background: Healthy gut microflora is essential for oral tolerance and immunity. A promising approach to preventing allergic diseases in genetically at-risk infants is to introduce administration of probiotics early in life when their immune system is still relatively immature.

Objective: In this follow-up study, we aim to determine if early-life supplementation with strains of probiotics has any long-term effect on allergic outcomes.

To characterize the cell mediated immunity (CMI) induced by the investigational CYD tetravalent dengue vaccine (TDV), we developed a whole-blood, intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) assay and a multiplex assay, each requiring 3 mL of blood. We assessed CMI before and 28 d after a first and third injection of CYD-TDV and one year after the third injection in a subset of 80 adolescents and adults enrolled in a phase II trial in Singapore (ClinicalTrial.gov NCT NCT00880893).

Introduction: Patients who have an adverse drug reaction are frequently labelled drug allergic without undergoing proper evaluation and confirmatory testing. These drug allergy labels may be inaccurate, leading to unnecessary lifelong avoidance. The aim of this study was to review the patients that underwent drug provocation tests (DPTs) in our centre and examine the usefulness of DPTs in confirming or rejecting a diagnosis of drug hypersensitivity.

Maternal nutrition has critical effects on the developing structures and functions of the fetus. Malnutrition during pregnancy can result in low birth weight and small for gestational age babies, increase risk for infection, and impact the immune system. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been reported to have immunomodulatory effects.
