Malaria blood safety policy in five non-endemic countries: a retrospective comparison through the lens of the ABO risk-based decision-making framework.

Background: In non-endemic countries, malaria risk is addressed by selectively testing or deferring at-risk donors. These policy decisions were made using a variety of decision-making frameworks prior to the development of the Alliance of Blood Operators Risk Based Decision-Making Framework. It is unclear whether the range of items assessed in the decision-making process would be increased if the Framework were used.

Assessing the risk of Babesia to the United States blood supply using a risk-based decision-making approach: Report of AABB's Ad Hoc Babesia Policy Working Group (original report).

Recognizing the increasing threat of transfusion-transmitted babesiosis to the US blood supply, the AABB Board of Directors tasked an Ad Hoc Babesia Policy Working Group (the Working Group) to use the Alliance of Blood Operators' risk-based decision-making (RBDM) framework to assess the risks and benefits of introducing Babesia donation testing in the United States. The regional nature of the Babesia microti risk added complexity to the RBDM assessment because of the unique operational and financial considerations for operators and hospitals located in endemic states. Therefore, the assessment considered safety, product availability, sector sustainability, and technology availability.

Spectrum of anxiety disorders: diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment.

Nearly 30% of women experience an anxiety disorder at some time during their lives, and there is increasing evidence that anxiety disorders are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Despite increased media coverage regarding anxiety disorders, women are reluctant to discuss signs and symptoms of anxiety with family or health care providers. Additionally, despite ongoing research and improved educational curricula, primary care and women's health care providers find diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders challenging.

The benefits of physical activity on diseases and risk factors are well known. Despite the known benefits, many segments of the population, particularly African-American women and girls, do not obtain adequate levels of physical activity. Strategies are needed to identify successful and sustainable interventions to increase physical activity among this population.

Diabetes, exercise, and foot care: minimizing risks in patients who have neuropathy.

Exercise is an important component of diabetes management that can help maintain physical fitness and help slow the development of peripheral neuropathy. However, because of impaired sensation, a person who has diabetic peripheral neuropathy risks developing infected foot ulcers when exercising. These infections can eventually lead to lower-extremity amputation.

Education of nurse practitioners in academic nurse-managed centers: student perspectives.

Clinical experiences for advanced practice nurses are increasingly a challenge. Finding settings that demonstrate primary care nursing practice in its finest form can be difficult. This article reports on nurse practitioner (NP) student feedback on clinical placements in the academic nurse-managed centers (ANMCs) associated with four Michigan schools or colleges of nursing.

The tree Cedrela odorata (Meliaceae): a morphologically subdivided species in Costa Rica.

In Latin America. Cedrela odorata is a wide ranging species that occurs in several environments, where it shows significant morphological variation. A common garden experiment was established with seedlings from 63 families of ten populations from two habitat types (mesic and dry), distributed throughout Costa Rica, to examine the relationships between quantitative variation and site of population origin.
