Introduction: Intracytoplasmic lumens (ICL) with or without magenta material and transgressing vessels are features of Hürthle cell neoplasms (HCN). After detection of intracytoplasmic colloid inclusions (CIs) including targetoid (magenta) body-like structures in the Hürthle cells (HC) in a case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), we reviewed cases of HT, thyroid neoplasms, hyperplastic nodules (HN) and colloid goitres to determine the frequency of these structures. Further, an attempt was made to find out the significance of CIs.

Methods: A review was undertaken of 385 consecutive patients admitted as an emergency for acute calculous gallbladder disease.
Background: This study evaluated the role of laparoscopic surgery in the early management of acute gallbladder disease in a single large UK teaching hospital.
Methods: Details of all emergency admissions for acute gallbladder disease from January 2000 to December 2001 were identified and additional information from the hospital records was reviewed retrospectively.
Results: Three hundred and eighty-five patients with gallstone disease (243 acute biliary pain, 142 acute cholecystitis) and 15 with acalculous disease were identified.

Background And Objective: This prospective, randomized and blinded study compared the performance of a new needle-through-needle (NTN) kit (Epistar; Medimex, Germany) with the double-space technique for providing combined spinal epidural anaesthesia during Caesarean section.
Methods: Following local Ethics Committee approval and patient consent, 200 females were randomized to receive combined spinal epidural anaesthesia by the double-space (n = 100) or NTN (n = 100) technique. The frequency with which the intrathecal component could achieve a T5 block to touch for Caesarean section without the need for epidural augmentation or an alternative technique was determined.
Objective: To study the fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic features of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with special reference to its tall cell variant (TCV), which is the most aggressive of the variants.
Study Design: Fifty-four PTC cases were classified into variants, and the frequency of well-known morphologic criteria was determined. Four parameters were quantitatively analyzed based on a study of 200 consecutive neoplastic follicular cells: shape of cells, color of cytoplasm, intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusion (INCI) and nuclear grooves.
Background: There is controversy about whether expression of nm23 is involved in suppression of metastases or contributes to tumour progression. Few studies have examined the role of nm23 in sarcomas. The aim of this study was to determine if expression of nm23 protein or its H1-subtype correlated with clinicopathological parameters in adult soft tissue sarcomas (STS).

Case: A 17-year-old female presented with a mobile, painless, 2-cm-diameter swelling over the right suprascapular area. Clinical diagnosis was lipoma.
Objective: To retrospectively analyze the role of ultrasound (US) imaging and US-guided fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis and management of abdominal hydatid cyst disease (HCD).
Subjects And Methods: The medical records of 55 diagnosed cases of HCD seen between January 1986 and December 2000 at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital and Al-Amiri Hospital in Kuwait were reviewed for demographic and clinical data, including radiology and serology. The US findings of the patients were classified into four types as follows: type I: single or multiple well-defined cysts, with or without detached or collapsed wall and with or without echogenic contents; type II: single or multiple cysts with peripheral cysts, with or without echogenic contents; type III: solid or semisolid lesions, and type IV: cysts with calcified walls.
The coexistence of the Philadelphia chromosome and inversion 16 abnormality in de novo acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) has only rarely been reported. We report the case of a 23-year-old man with these cytogenetic abnormalities. He is in a durable remission following intensive chemotherapy.

To find out the gross and microscopic differentiating features between nipple discharges (ND) due to various breast lesions, smears of 602 ND samples from 484 cases were reviewed by one of the investigators (D.K.D.

Most reports on the cytologic features of granular cell tumors have been on lesions from the breast or respiratory tract. However, there are only a few reports on fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic diagnosis of cutaneous or soft tissue granular cell tumors.

This study describes the applicability and practical aspects of the technique in establishing the diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis (TB) with the aid of radiographic guidance. The study was conducted in a major teaching hospital in Kuwait between the years 1985 and 1994.

Case: FNAC was done on a 3-cm-diameter thyroid swelling in the left lower lobe of the thyroid gland. Smears showed a large number of lymphocytes, eosinophils, thyroid follicular cells and discrete, large cells with prominent nuclear grooves.
Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the tongue has rarely been described.
Case: A 47-year-old male was referred to the cytology laboratory for FNAC of a 3-cm-diameter swelling on the dorsum of the tongue, with a primary clinical diagnosis of soft tissue tumor. FNAC smears showed discrete, monomorphic, round to oval cells with scanty, deep blue cytoplasm.

Objective: To correlate the cytologic grade of breast carcinoma with DNA image cytometry (ICM) and nuclear area on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) smears.
Study Design: In this prospective study, FNAC material from 28 breast carcinomas were studied for cytologic grade and DNA ICM. Breast carcinomas were classified as grade 1-3 (low to high).
Objective: To study the association between various fetal congenital malformations and the biophysical profile (BPP), we tested the following hypotheses: (1) a specific organ system malformation is associated with the absence of one or more BPP parameters, and (2) four BPP parameters are not affected by the advancement of fetal maturation.
Study Design: From 1985 to 1995, 316 fetuses with congenital malformations and 351 controls were identified in a high-risk population undergoing ultrasound examinations of anatomic structures and biophysical profile evaluations. For investigation of the influence of fetal maturity on biophysical profile evaluations, both the malformed fetuses and the controls were stratified into two gestational-age groups, 26-34 weeks and > 34 completed weeks.
One-photon emission computed tomography (OPECT) was used to examine 87 patients with the epileptiform syndrome. Eighty five patients had impaired drug distribution which was suggestive of varying degree cerebral circulatory disorders. OPECT with a Tc-99m-gm-pao used in patients with the epileptiform syndrome revealed the morphological substract of brain structures.
