Background: Machine learning (ML) is increasingly used in population and public health to support epidemiological studies, surveillance, and evaluation. Our objective was to conduct a scoping review to identify studies that use ML in population health, with a focus on its use in non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We also examine potential algorithmic biases in model design, training, and implementation, as well as efforts to mitigate these biases.

Objectives: In Pakistan, healthcare utilization is linked to out-of-pocket payments (OOP) which disproportionately affect low-income households. We investigated socioeconomic inequality in OOP and catastrophic health expenditures (CHEs), and the contribution of sociodemographic factors to these inequalities.

Methods: Socioeconomic inequalities were quantified using the concentration index (CI), and the slope (SII) and relative (RII) indices of inequality using data from three rounds of Household Integrated Economic Survey (2007-08, 2011-12, and 2018-19).

Introduction: Financial protection (FP) is a central function of health systems to enhance access to essential care and improve health equity. We aim to characterise evidence on the distribution of FP in high-income countries as well as how equity of FP is conceptualised and measured in these settings. Findings from this review can advance methodological and conceptual knowledge about equity in FP, guide the evaluation of health systems and inform policy on eliminating inequitable barriers to care to achieve universal health coverage.

Importance: Approximately 1 in 5 adults are diagnosed with depression in their lifetime. However, less than half receive help from a health professional, with the treatment gap being worse for individuals with socioeconomic disadvantage. Computer-assisted cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) is an effective and convenient strategy to treat depression; however, its cost-effectiveness in a sociodemographically diverse population remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how social factors affect access to specialist medical services for Canadians aged 45 and older, despite universal health coverage under the Canada Health Act.
  • Results indicate that while 97% of participants accessed specialist care, about half of those who faced challenges were still waiting for appointments, with younger age, rural living, low income, and poor health impacting access.
  • The findings highlight that those from marginalized backgrounds are more likely to experience difficulties, suggesting a need for targeted policy interventions to improve equitable access to healthcare.

Background: Infectious disease (ID) models have been the backbone of policy decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, models often overlook variation in disease risk, health burden, and policy impact across social groups. Nonetheless, social determinants are becoming increasingly recognized as fundamental to the success of control strategies overall and to the mitigation of disparities.

Drought poses a significant challenge to wheat production globally, leading to substantial yield losses and affecting various agronomic and physiological traits. The genetic route offers potential solutions to improve water-use efficiency (WUE) in wheat and mitigate the negative impacts of drought stress. Breeding for drought tolerance involves selecting desirable plants such as efficient water usage, deep root systems, delayed senescence, and late wilting point.

Half of women with depression in the perinatal period are not identified in routine care, and missed cases reflect inequalities in other areas of maternity care. Case finding (screening) for depression in pregnant women may be a cost-effective strategy to improve identification, and targeted case finding directs finite resources towards the greatest need. We compared the cost-effectiveness of three case-finding strategies: no case finding, universal (all pregnant women), and targeted (only pregnant women with risk factors for antenatal depression, i.

People who are at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis receive clinical care with the aim to prevent first-episode psychosis (FEP), regardless of the risk of conversion to psychosis. An economic model from the Canadian health system perspective was developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of treating all with UHR compared to risk stratification over a 15-year time horizon, based on conversion probability, expected quality-of-life and costs. The analysis used a decision tree followed by a Markov model.

Article Synopsis
  • Drought is hurting wheat production, a major food crop, due to climate change and lack of water.
  • Scientists tested the use of nano-biochar (NBC) and brassinosteroids (BR) to help wheat grow better during dry conditions.
  • They found that using both NBC and BR together led to the best results, making the wheat plants taller and producing more grains compared to just using one or none.

Article Synopsis
  • Phosphorus (P) is essential for plant nutrition and human food production, yet over 40% of cultivated soils lack sufficient P levels, posing challenges for sustainable agriculture as the global population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050.
  • Current agricultural practices and new techniques, such as intercropping and green manure crops, can enhance P availability in soil and promote greater crop yields compared to monocropping systems.
  • Innovations like mycorrhizal fungi inoculation and improved management practices, including crop rotation and efficient fertilizers, are crucial in maximizing P utilization and addressing food production needs in a changing environment.

Background/objective: While several psychotropic and cardiovascular drugs have been identified as fall-risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs) in older adults, the intervening mechanisms linking FRIDs and falls are unclear. It is plausible that gait performance is an intermediate variable on the causal pathway between FRIDs and falls. The current evidence on the relationship between medication use and gait performance in older adults is scarce.
