Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is an important cause of heart failure (HF) in northern Nigeria and many other regions of the world. Although the aetiology is unknown, several aetiopathogenic mechanisms have been proposed, including myocarditis, vasculo-hormonal (16-kDa prolactin and Cathepsin D), genetic susceptibility and selenium deficiency hypotheses. The peripartum cardiomyopathy in Nigeria (PEACE) registry has revealed that three socioeconomic factors (lack of formal education, unemployment, underweight status), pre-eclampsia and selenium deficiency were independently associated with higher risk for PPCM.

In this study, we develop an SIR-type model which captures both human-to-human and environment-to-human-to-environment transmissions that allows the recruitment of corona viruses in the environment in the midst of booster vaccine program. Background/aims: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is now a major public health problem with heavy morbidity and mortality in rural Africans despite the lingering dietary fiber-rich foodstuffs consumption. Studies have shown that increased intake of dietary fiber which contribute to low fecal pH and also influences the activity of intestinal microbiota, is associated with a lowered risk for CRC. However, whether or not the apparent high dietary fiber consumption by Africans do not longer protects against CRC risk is unknown.
