Platelets are hyperactive in patients with type2 diabetes (T2DM), they adhere to vascular endothelium and play a key role in macrovascular complications. Platelets activity can be measured by flow-cytometry (cluster of differentiation (CD) 41, CD 42, CD 62, CD 63), which allows detection of surface antigens in a sensitive and specific manner. This study aimed to describe platelets activity in T2DM in association with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications in relation to duration of diabetes (DM).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between elevated vitamin B12 levels and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), which include types of blood cancers like CML, PV, MF, and ET, suggesting that higher B12 could indicate disease presence and activity.
  • Data from 467 MPN patients showed that 20% had elevated B12 levels, particularly in those with CML, with significant reductions in B12 levels observed after one year of treatment.
  • While increased B12 levels appear related to MPN activity, their effectiveness as a consistent diagnostic marker needs more research to establish reliable sensitivity, specificity, and cutoff values.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the levels of plasma gelsolin (pGSN) in 184 neonates, comparing 92 with late-onset sepsis (LOS) to 92 controls, to determine if it could serve as a diagnostic and prognostic marker.
  • - Results showed that pGSN levels were significantly lower in septic neonates (90.63 ± 20.64) compared to healthy controls (451.83 ± 209.59), and these levels correlated with the severity of sepsis and outcomes, such as mortality and organ failure.
  • - pGSN levels increased significantly in survivors after their sepsis improved, suggesting that it could be a reliable marker for diagnosing and predicting outcomes in neonatal late

Background: Given the sparse data on the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and its biological effector molecules ACE1 and ACE2 in pediatric COVID-19 cases, we investigated whether the ACE1 insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism could be a genetic marker for susceptibility to COVID-19 in Egyptian children and adolescents.

Methods: This was a case-control study included four hundred sixty patients diagnosed with COVID-19, and 460 well-matched healthy control children and adolescents. The I/D polymorphism (rs1799752) in the ACE1 gene was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), meanwhile the ACE serum concentrations were assessed by ELISA.

Medical treatment has changed drastically in recent years, especially for advanced stages of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), for which the development of immunotherapy and molecular targeted therapy significantly increased survival and quality of life. This single-center retrospective study aimed to analyze the outcome predictors, the surrogate outcomes, and the patient-reported outcomes after neoadjuvant immunotherapy for initially unresectable NSCLC. Patients affected by an initially unresectable NSCLC and identified between March 2014 and December 2021 who received immunotherapy alone or in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy were collected.

Background: JCOG0802/WJOG4607L showed benefits in overall survival (OS) of segmentectomy. CALGB 140503 confirmed that sublobar resection was not inferior to lobectomy concerning recurrence-free survival (RFS) but did not provide specific OS and RFS according to the techniques of sublobar resections. Hence, we retrospectively analyze the survival differences between wedge resection and lobectomies for stage IA lung cancer.

Postoperative management after major and minor thoracic surgeries is crucial for patient recovery and can be challenging. Major thoracic surgeries, such as extensive pulmonary resections, especially in patients with poor health status, may require intensive surveillance, particularly during the first 24-72 h after surgery. Moreover, thanks to the demographic development and medical progress in perioperative medicine, more patients with comorbidities undergoing thoracic procedures require proper management in the postoperative period to improve prognosis and decrease hospital stay.
