Knowledge of the composition of proteins that interact with plasma DNA will provide a better understanding of the homeostasis of circulating nucleic acids and the various modes of interaction with target cells, which may be useful in the development of gene targeted therapy approaches. The goal of the present study is to shed light on the composition and architecture of histone-containing nucleoprotein complexes (NPCs) from the blood plasma of healthy females (HFs) and breast cancer patients (BCPs) and to explore the relationship of proteins with crucial steps of tumor progression: epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cell proliferation, invasion, cell migration, stimulation of angiogenesis, and immune response. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometric analysis of NPCs isolated from blood samples using affine chromatography was performed.

Haifa Bay (HB), located along the northern Mediterranean shore of Israel was polluted with Hg from a chlor-alkali plant (ECI) and from the Qishon River industries, for decades. From the mid-1980s industrial Hg loads into HB decreased dramatically until their complete cessation in 2000. Consequently, concentrations in marine biota and sediments decreased almost to reference levels.

The effect of HS on changes in erythrocyte volume was studied by spectrophotometrical and potentiometric methods. It was found that HS donor NaHS (2.5, 10, and 100 μM) induced an increase in erythrocyte volume in heterosmotic media.

Purpose: Accurate, patient-specific radiation dosimetry for CT scanning is critical to optimize radiation doses and balance dose against image quality. While Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is often used to estimate doses from CT, comparison of estimates to experimentally measured values is lacking for advanced CT scanners incorporating novel design features. We aimed to compare radiation dose estimates from MC simulation to doses measured in physical anthropomorphic phantoms using metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) in a 256-slice CT scanner.

Purpose: Metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) serve as a helpful tool for organ radiation dosimetry and their use has grown in computed tomography (CT). While different approaches have been used for MOSFET calibration, those using the commonly available 100 mm pencil ionization chamber have not incorporated measurements performed throughout its length, and moreover, no previous work has rigorously evaluated the multiple sources of error involved in MOSFET calibration. In this paper, we propose a new MOSFET calibration approach to translate MOSFET voltage measurements into absorbed dose from CT, based on serial measurements performed throughout the length of a 100-mm ionization chamber, and perform an analysis of the errors of MOSFET voltage measurements and four sources of error in calibration.

Concentrations of Hg, Se, Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn and As, in kidney, liver, muscle and blubber from 7 specimens of Stenella coeruleoalba, stranded along the Israeli Mediterranean coast (IMC) from 2006 to 2011 (2011-series) were determined and compared to previous data on S. coeruleoalba from the IMC (2001-series). No differences were observed in essential and toxic elements concentrations, between the two series, except for hepatic Mn which was higher in the latter.

Computed tomography is a widely used medical imaging technique that has high spatial and temporal resolution. Its weakness is its low sensitivity towards contrast media. Iterative reconstruction techniques (ITER) have recently become available, which provide reduced image noise compared with traditional filtered back-projection methods (FBP), which may allow the sensitivity of CT to be improved, however this effect has not been studied in detail.

This study provides, for the first time, a baseline evaluation of dioxin-like biological activity in sediments and fish sampled in- and adjacent to anchorages along the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts of Israel. It indicates the effect of past pollution, still present in the sediments of older Israeli harbors, with putative contribution of still existing sources of pollution. A commercial reporter gene bioassay was used to evaluate the biological activity of dioxin-like compounds extracted from the samples.

Efficient implementation of an environmental biomarker requires multi-annual comparability over a wide geographical range. The present study improved the comparability of a quantitative competitive metallothionein (MT) enzyme-linked-immuno-sorbent-assay (ELISA) in the sentinel fish Lithognathus mormyrus by introducing to the assay recombinant MT and beta-actin standards. Commercial antibodies for cod MT and mammalian actin were implemented.

Injection of RS 102221 (selective antagonist of serotonin 5-HT2C receptors) in a dose of 2 mg/kg reduced anxiety of mice in the light-darkness test and decreased the amplitude of the startle reflex. RS 102221 in a dose of 1 mg/kg reduced prestimulus inhibition of the startle reflex. No behavioral changes in Porsolt test and motor activity in the open field test were detected.

Hepatic cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) expression was partially characterized in the striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) from the Mediterranean coast of Israel as part of the process of establishing the CYP1A gene as an environmental biomarker. Reverse transcription-competitive polymerase chain reaction, competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) assay were used for evaluating transcript, protein, and catalytic activity levels, respectively, in absolute units. Highest elucidated transcript, protein, and catalytic activity levels were 0.
