Over the years, several polymers have been developed for use in prosthetic heart valves as alternatives to xenografts. However, most of these materials are beset with a variety of issues, including low material strength, biodegradation, high dynamic creep, calcification, and poor hemocompatibility. We studied the mechanical, surface, and flow-mediated thrombogenic response of poly(styrene-coblock-4-vinylbenzocyclobutene)-polyisobutylene-poly(styrene-coblock-4-vinylbenzocylcobutene) (xSIBS), a thermoset version of the thermoplastic elastomeric polyolefin poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) (SIBS), which has been shown to be resistant to in vivo hydrolysis, oxidation, and enzymolysis.

We believe that a key step in the development of a prosthesis for reconstruction of dysfunctional muscular tissue is the ability to reconstitute the in vivo-like 3-dimensional (3D) organization of skeletal muscle in vitro with isolated satellite cells. In our present proof of principle studies, we have successfully constructed a multilayered culture of skeletal muscle cells, derived from neonatal satellite cells, that are distributed in a 3D pattern of organization that mimics many of the features of intact tissue.

Novel elastomeric nonporous polyurethane membranes were synthesised with differing hard segment contents for evaluation as possible islet encapsulation matrices. Physico-chemical properties of these membranes were reported earlier by authors and have been found suitable for immunoisolation. In the present study, membranes were evaluated for their in vitro biocompatibility.
