Article Synopsis
  • Peritonitis is a serious complication for patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), requiring quick identification of the pathogens for effective treatment.
  • A study tested the effectiveness of 16S rRNA gene and ITS region PCR and sequencing compared to traditional culture methods in diagnosing infections from dialysate in suspected peritonitis cases.
  • Results showed higher identification rates with molecular methods (81%) versus culture methods (14% with conventional and 48% with automated), but PCR alone is not sufficient for all cases, and is better used alongside traditional cultures.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have been increasingly recognized as a clinically important group of species that can cause several opportunistic nosocomial infections. There are at least 47 known species of Staphylococci and to differentiate all these species >40 biochemical tests need to be performed. The present study was able to refine the CoNS identification process by using only five tests to identify S.

Background And Objective: Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (CCRCC) is the most common adult renal neoplasm. Staging and grading of RCC are important predictors of survival. Fuhrman nuclear grading is widely used for CCRCC, the subjective nature of which has prompted more objective methods to evaluate nuclear features.

Although not previously known to cause human infections, Kocuria species have now emerged as human pathogens, mostly in compromised hosts with severe underlying disease. Recently, there has been an increasing incidence of different types of Kocuria infections reported, most likely due to the adoption of better identification methods. Here, we report a case of peritonitis caused by Kocuria rosea in a diabetic nephropathy patient who was on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Metastatic thyroid carcinoma is clinically silent and found only at autopsy in most instances. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common and constitutes 56% of all secondary malignancies. However, preoperative distinction between primary and secondary thyroid neoplasms is often challenging.
