Perineural tumour spread in head and neck cancer can be a challenging diagnosis for radiologists; head and neck anatomy is intimidating and perineural tumour spread can be subtle and difficult to detect. It results in significant morbidity for patients, can upstage disease and will frequently result in more prolonged treatment courses. This pictorial review provides a thorough examination of the imaging characteristics of perineural tumour spread in head and neck malignancy.

In this study, the ability of antibodies to inhibit viral entry into the host cell through the interaction of the receptor binding domain of the viral spike protein and the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor on the human cell surface was investigated. The SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels in 20 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the samples were further analyzed using a functional binding assay.

In our institution, CTCA availability was increased in January 2020, and subsequently, expanded further to replace all exercise testing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to assess the impact of increased utilisation of CTCA on length of stay in patients presenting with chest pain in the prepandemic era and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods All outpatient CTCAs requested for stable chest pain during 2017 in our catchment area were included. Rate of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), presentations with chest pain to the emergency department (ED), cardiology outpatient attendance, time interval in alteration of Coronary artery disease (CAD) prognostic treatment, rate of angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were noted.

Material And Methods: All diagnosed cases of oesophageal cancer were retrospectively reviewed (2010-2016). Patients that had a confirmed diagnosis of oesophageal cancer with avid SCLNs on staging PET were included in the study.
The divergent clinical outcomes of human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and HTLV-2 infections have been attributed to functional differences in their antisense proteins. In contrast to HTLV-1 bZIP factor (HBZ), the role of the antisense protein of HTLV-2 (APH-2) in HTLV-2 infection is poorly understood. In previous studies, we identified the endosomal sorting complex required for transport 0 (ESCRT-0) subunit HRS as a novel interaction partner of APH-2 but not HBZ.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) regulatory proteins Tax and HBZ play indispensable roles in regulating viral and cellular gene expression. BRG1, the ATPase subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, has been demonstrated to be essential not only for Tax transactivation but also for viral replication. We sought to investigate the physical interaction between HBZ and BRG1 and to determine the effect of these interactions on Tax-mediated long terminal repeat (LTR) activation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAim: To describe and quantify the range of non-interpretive tasks engaged in by consultant radiologists in Ireland today.
Materials And Methods: A multiple-choice electronic survey was circulated to over 200 Irish consultant radiologists and results were analysed.
Results: Responses were received from approximately 40% of the 267 full-time equivalent consultants in Ireland at the time of the survey.
The pathogenesis of human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is strongly linked to the viral regulatory proteins Tax1 and HBZ, whose opposing functions contribute to the clinical outcome of infection. Type I interferons alpha and beta (IFN-α and IFN-β) are key cytokines involved in innate immunity, and IFN-α, in combination with other antivirals, is extensively used in the treatment of HTLV-1 infection. The relationship between HTLV-1 and IFN signaling is unclear, and to date the effect of HBZ on this pathway has not been examined.

These tests, which measure CSF protein concentrations of amyloid-β42 (Aβ42), total tau (t-tau) and phospho tau (p-tau), were recently validated, accredited and made available clinically for the first time in Ireland. A working group, comprising Irish clinical and scientific researchers, met to review a) the validation results; b) international consensus opinions, and c) research and clinical evidence as to the clinical utility of CSF biomarker analysis for AD dementia diagnosis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) pathway plays key roles in multivesicular bodies (MVBs) formation and lysosomal degradation of membrane receptors, viral budding, and midbody abscission during cytokinesis. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is regarded as a prototypical cargo of the MVB/ESCRT pathway and following stimulation by epidermal growth factor (EGF) EGFR/EGF complexes are internalized, sorted into MVBs, and degraded by lysosomes or recycled back to the cell membrane. Here, we describe an assay to analyze the effect of human T-cell leukemia (HTLV) regulatory proteins on the functionality of ESCRT-dependent MVB/lysosomal trafficking of EGFR/EGF complexes.

Materials And Methods: All emergency admissions, totalling 25,326 imaging investigations between 2010-2014 were evaluated. The 50(th), 75(th), and 90(th) centiles of completion times for each imaging type was entered into a multivariable truncated Poisson regression model predicting the length of hospital stay.
The human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1 and type 2 (HTLV-1/HTLV-2) antisense proteins HBZ and APH-2 play key roles in the HTLV lifecycles and persistence in the host. Nuclear Factors Associated with double-stranded RNA (NFAR) proteins NF90/110 function in the lifecycles of several viruses and participate in host innate immunity against infection and oncogenesis. Using GST pulldown and co-immunoprecipitation assays we demonstrate specific novel interactions between HBZ/APH-2 and NF90/110 and characterised the protein domains involved.

It encompasses statistical analysis, forecasting and predictive modelling and is used as an umbrella term for decision support and business intelligence systems. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether utilising BA technologies could contribute towards improved decision support and resource management within radiology departments.

However, evidence to guide the use of rt-PA for catheter dysfunction is limited.
Methods: We evaluated outcomes using two catheter dysfunction protocols in a cohort of consecutive prevalent dialysis patients (Jan 2013 to Sep 2014) undergoing HD with a tunneled catheter.
Fat embolism syndrome usually occurs following trauma where fat globules from long bone fractures produce pulmonary, cerebral or cutaneous effects. This case illustrates the presence of macroscopic fat in the right common femoral vein secondary to a long bone fracture. This finding is rare but should be looked for on cross-sectional imaging to allow early, aggressive treatment of fat embolism syndrome.

We used logistic regression of the resource indicator against 30-day in-hospital mortality and adjusted this risk estimate for other outcome predictors. Generally, resource indicators predicted an increased risk of a 30-day in-hospital death.

Improving access to hospital based radiology services is one of Health Information and Quality Authority's key recommendations in its report on patient referrals from general practice. This study aimed to review all GP referrals for ultrasound investigations to a tertiary referral teaching hospital over a seven month period with respect to their demographics, waiting times and diagnostic outcomes.
