Few studies have investigated emotional functioning in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). To explore the nature and extent of emotion difficulties in OCPD, the authors examined four domains of self-reported emotional functioning--negative affectivity, anger, emotion regulation, and emotion expressivity--in women with OCPD and compared them to a borderline personality disorder (BPD) group and a healthy control group. Previous studies suggest low vitamin K status is associated with higher osteoarthritis (OA) prevalence and incidence.
Objective: To clarify what joint tissues vitamin K is relevant to in OA, we investigated the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between vitamin K status and knee OA structural features measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

A number of acidic residues in transmembrane helices have been shown to be important for Na(+) translocation. One of these, Asp-397 in the NqrB subunit, is a key residue for Na(+) uptake and binding.

Background: Heart transplant (HT) recipients are at risk for invasive fungal disease (IFD), a morbid and potentially fatal complication.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for IFD in HT recipients from 1995 to 2012 at a single center. IFD cases were classified as proven or probable IFD according to current consensus definitions of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group.
Background: Poor vitamin K status is linked to greater risk of several chronic diseases. Age, sex, and diet are determinants of circulating vitamin K; however, there is still large unexplained interindividual variability in vitamin K status. Here, we tailor FETs fabricated from these arrays to achieve on-conductance (G(on)) per width and an on-off ratio (G(on)/G(off)) of 261 μS/μm and 2 × 10(5), respectively, for a channel length (L(ch)) of 240 nm and 116 μS/μm and 1 × 10(6), respectively, for an L(ch) of 1 μm.

Using gas chromatographic analysis we determined that Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain JNA in pure culture dechlorinated pentachlorophenol to 3,5-dichlorophenol (DCP) via removal of the ortho and para chlorines in all of the three possible pathways. In addition, JNA dechlorinated 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol via 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) and 2,4,5-TCP to 2,4-DCP and 3,4-DCP, respectively, and dechlorinated 2,3,6-TCP to 3-chlorophenol (CP) via 2,5-DCP.

Methods: Using thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, we characterized the in vitro volatile metabolite profile of Aspergillus fumigatus, the most common cause of IA, and other pathogenic aspergilli. We prospectively collected breath samples from patients with suspected invasive fungal pneumonia from 2011 to 2013, and assessed whether we could discriminate patients with proven or probable IA from patients without aspergillosis, as determined by European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group consensus definitions, by direct detection of fungal volatile metabolites in these breath samples.

We report the performance advantages obtained by sub 100nm gold nanomatryushkas, comprising concentric gold-silica-gold layers compared to conventional ~150nm silica core gold nanoshells for photothermal therapy of triple negative breast cancer. We demonstrate that a 33% reduction in silica-core-gold-shell nanoparticle size, while retaining near-infrared plasmon resonance, and keeping the nanoparticle surface charge constant, results in a four to five fold tumor accumulation of nanoparticles following equal dose of injected gold for both sizes.

Objective: To examine the relationship of borderline personality disorder (BPD) to mood disorders by using data from the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study on the reciprocal interactions of BPD with both depressive and bipolar disorders over the course of 10 years.
Method: The study included 223 BPD patients with DSM-IV-defined co-occurring major depressive disorder (MDD) (n = 161), bipolar I disorder (n = 34), and bipolar II disorder (n = 28) who were reliably and prospectively assessed over a period of 10 years between 1997 and 2009. Proportional hazards regression analyses were used to assess the effects of improvement or worsening of BPD and mood disorders on each disorder's time to remission and time to relapse.
Au nanoparticles with plasmon resonances in the near-infrared (NIR) region of the spectrum efficiently convert light into heat, a property useful for the photothermal ablation of cancerous tumors subsequent to nanoparticle uptake at the tumor site. A critical aspect of this process is nanoparticle size, which influences both tumor uptake and photothermal efficiency. Purpose: Job satisfaction of nurse practitioners (NPs) has been studied using quantitative methods. A grounded theory approach was used in this study to understand the contextual nature of the NPs' description of job satisfaction from a personal perspective.
Data Source: A grounded theory approach as described by Glaser and Strauss was used in this study.
This study aimed to determine the unique impact of PTSD symptoms, beyond other frequently examined factors on physical and mental health functioning in a sample of returning veterans. Assessments of 168 returning OEF/OIF veterans conducted an average of six months following return from deployment included measures of emotional disorders and the Short Form (36) Health Survey. Hierarchical multiple regressions revealed significant, unique contribution of Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) score above all other predictors in the model (demographics, severity of trauma exposure, physical injury, substance abuse and depressive symptoms), for both the physical (8%) and mental (6%) health aggregate scores, along with significant prediction of physical health (4-10%) and mental health (3-7%) subscale scores.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, and a recent genome-wide association study identified the hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channel 4 (HCN4) as a novel AF susceptibility locus. HCN4 encodes for the cardiac pacemaker channel, and HCN4 mutations are associated with familial sinus bradycardia and AF.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether novel variants in the coding region of HCN4 contribute to the susceptibility for AF.
Modest up-regulation of either HER-ligands or receptors has been implicated in acquired endocrine resistance. AZD8931, a dual tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) of epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR)/HER2, has been shown to more effectively block ligand-dependent HER signaling than the HER TKIs lapatinib or gefitinib. We therefore examined the effect of AZD8931 in ER-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer cells with acquired resistance to tamoxifen, where there is ligand up-regulation associated with HER pathway activation.
