A study of 30 patients suffering of acute pneumonia indicates that the development of acute pneumonia occurs against the background of disorders of the functional activity of monocytes with prevalent reduction of the functional activity of phagocytosis and inhibition of the unspecific cellular antiviral resistance. Leucocytic interferon sharply activates phagocytosis. The number of phagocytic cells and activity of phagocytosis reduced and the number of virus-involved immunocompetent cells increased under the effect of antibiotics.

A study of the content of lymphocytes and their populations, indices of intracellular viral involvement of the lymphocytes in 32 patients with acute purulent-destructive pulmonary diseases and 46 healthy persons revealed an increase of the percent of non-viable lymphocytes containing viral inclusions. Viral involvement of lymphocytes is considered one the leading causes of increased lymphocyte death.

The functional activity of monocytes in acute viral hepatitis has been studied. As revealed by the NBT test, circulating monocytes are damaged by viruses and/or virus-containing complexes. Proceeding from this fact, the percentage of monocytes containing virus inclusions should be considered as the percentage of monocytes damaged by the virus, and the coefficient of the inclusion of viral particles should be considered as the quantitative characteristic of the viral damage of monocytes.
