In this study, we used multilayer graphene oxide (GO) obtained by anodic oxidation of graphite powder in 83% sulfuric acid. The modification of GO was carried out by its interaction with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) according to the mechanism of nucleophilic substitution between the amino group of HMDA (HMDA) and the epoxy groups of GO, accompanied by partial reduction of multilayer GO and an increase in the deformation of the carbon layers. The structure and properties of modified HMDA-GO were characterized using research methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Spin-orbit coupling in the electronic states of solution-processed hybrid metal halide perovskites forms complex spin-textures in the band structures and allows for optical manipulation of the excited state spin-polarizations. Here, we report that motional narrowing acts on the photoexcited spin-polarization in CHNHPbBr thin films, which are doped at percentage-level with Mn ions. Using ultrafast circularly polarized broadband transient absorption spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures, we investigate the spin population dynamics in these doped hybrid perovskites and find that spin relaxation lifetimes are increased by a factor of 3 compared to those of undoped materials.

Hybrid perovskite semiconductor materials are predicted to lock chirality into place and encode asymmetry into their electronic states, while softness of their crystal lattice accommodates lattice strain to maintain high crystal quality with low defect densities, necessary for high luminescence yields. We report photoluminescence quantum efficiencies as high as 39% and degrees of circularly polarized photoluminescence of up to 52%, at room temperature, in the chiral layered hybrid lead-halide perovskites (R/S/Rac)-3BrMBAPbI [3BrMBA = 1-(3-bromphenyl)-ethylamine]. Using transient chiroptical spectroscopy, we explain the excellent photoluminescence yields from suppression of nonradiative loss channels and high rates of radiative recombination.

Biophysical research plays a crucial role in drug discovery, but many druglike molecules are poorly soluble and prone to aggregation, making their analysis challenging and susceptible to artifacts. To address this issue, we propose an approach that uses poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as an excipient in aqueous buffers to reduce the propensity of small molecules to aggregate. We show how PEG allows us to measure the thermodynamics of a complex formed by a heterobifunctional Small Molecule (hSM) that brings two proteins together.

Antiferromagnets are promising materials for future opto-spintronic applications since they show spin dynamics in the THz range and no net magnetization. Recently, layered van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets have been reported, which combine low-dimensional excitonic properties with complex spin-structure. While various methods for the fabrication of vdW 2D crystals exist, formation of large area and continuous thin films is challenging because of either limited scalability, synthetic complexity, or low opto-spintronic quality of the final material.

The purpose of this work is to study the influence of the electric field strength of an electromagnetic wave with the maximum modifying effect on an epoxy basalt-filled oligomer, which is of great scientific and practical importance for the development of microwave oligomer modification technology. The optimal modes of microwave modification, under which the highest values of the mechanical properties of an epoxy basalt-filled polymer composite material are obtained, are identified: power of 400 W and an exposure time of 24 s. At the same time, the breaking stress in bending increases by 20%, the impact strength increases by 2 times, and hardness increases by 31%.

The bacterial transporter EmrE is a homo-dimeric membrane protein that effluxes cationic polyaromatic substrates against the concentration gradient by coupling to proton transport. As the archetype of the small multidrug resistance family of transporters, EmrE structure and dynamics provide atomic insights into the mechanism of transport by this family of proteins. We recently determined high-resolution structures of EmrE in complex with a cationic substrate, tetra(4-fluorophenyl)phosphonium (F-TPP), using solid-state NMR spectroscopy and an S64V-EmrE mutant.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has long been recognized as a highly contagious, transboundary disease of livestock incurring substantial losses and burdens to animal production and trade across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Due to the recent emergence of the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 lineage globally contributing to the expansion of FMD, molecular epidemiological investigations help in tracing the evolution of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) across endemic and newly affected regions. In this work, our phylogenetic analysis reveals that the recent FMDV incursions in Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan in 2021-2022 were due to the virus belonging to the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e sublineage, belonging to the cluster from Cambodian FMDV isolates.

We studied the toxic effects of cerium and fluoride species on human dental pulp stem cells and epithelial cells of as a surrogate for the human oral mucosa. The sequential use of CeCl and NHF solutions in equimolar sub-toxic concentrations enabled the possible toxic effects of individual components to be avoided, ensuring the preservation of the metabolic activity of the cells due to the formation of CeF nanoparticles. Cerium fluoride nanoparticles and terbium-doped cerium fluoride nanoparticles exhibited neither cytotoxicity nor genotoxicity to dental pulp stem cells, even at high concentrations (10 M).

A method is proposed for the preparation of stable sols of nanocrystalline cerium dioxide in nonpolar solvents, based on surface modification of CeO nanoparticles obtained by thermal hydrolysis of concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate with residues of 2-ethylhexanoic and octanoic acids. The synthesis was carried out at temperatures below 100 °C and did not require the use of expensive and toxic reagents. An assessment of the radical-scavenging properties of the obtained sols using the superoxide anion-radical neutralization model revealed that they demonstrate notable antioxidant activity.

The homo-dimeric bacterial membrane protein EmrE effluxes polyaromatic cationic substrates in a proton-coupled manner to cause multidrug resistance. We recently determined the structure of substrate-bound EmrE in phospholipid bilayers by measuring hundreds of protein-ligand H-F distances for a fluorinated substrate, 4-fluoro-tetraphenylphosphonium (F-TPP), using solid-state NMR. This structure was solved at low pH where one of the two proton-binding Glu14 residues is protonated.

This paper reports on a comprehensive study of the UV-shielding properties (namely, the sun protection factor and the factor of protection against UV-A radiation) and cytotoxicity (including photocytotoxicity) of amorphous and crystalline cerium(IV) phosphates. It has been shown that cerium(IV) phosphate NHCe(PO) is characterised by UV-shielding properties that are comparable to those of nanocrystalline TiO and CeO. Moreover, cerium(IV) phosphates did not show toxicity towards cell cultures of NCTC L929 line mouse fibroblasts and human mesenchymal stem cells, in a wide range of concentrations, and even enhanced the proliferative activity of the latter.

Internuclear distances represent one of the main structural constraints in molecular structure determination using solid-state NMR spectroscopy, complementing chemical shifts and orientational restraints. Although a large number of magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR techniques have been available for distance measurements, traditional C and N NMR experiments are inherently limited to distances of a few angstroms due to the low gyromagnetic ratios of these nuclei. Recent development of fast MAS triple-resonance F and H NMR probes has stimulated the design of MAS NMR experiments that measure distances in the 1-2 nm range with high sensitivity.
