A probability sample (n = 2000) of primary and preparatory school children (6-15 years old) in a rural area, in the eastern part of Nile Delta, Egypt, were examined for S. haematobium eggs using the sedimentation technique. A sub-sample, consisting of all children whose urine samples were positive, was subjected to short interview and urine examination for egg counting using the modern monofilament polyamide (Nytrel) filters.

Forty-three patients who fulfilled the international criteria for prolonged fever were exposed to thorough history taking, clinical and laboratory investigations. The latter included urine and stool examination, urine and blood culture, haemogram, liver and renal function tests, chest X-ray, tuberculin test, bone marrow, liver biopsy, blood films, serological tests including ELISA, IHA and IFA for detection of schistosomiasis, toxoplasmosis and malaria. Parasitic infections were detected in 30/43 (69.

Twenty five children and adults with different types of malignancies were picked up from the attendants of Mansoura University Hospital and Ain Shams University Paediatrics Hospital. Their sera were examined for anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies by the micro-ELISA before and after chemotherapy treatment. Ten normal cross-matched individuals were selected as a control group.

Twenty male patients with zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis were included in this study. Each patient received 1200 mg of allopurinol/day in divided doses for a duration of one month. 80% of patients had an excellent response (cure), however, sometimes leaving mild pigmented or faintly coloured skin i.

In this work, 180 Syrian golden hamsters were infected with Schistosoma mansoni and 30 cross matched for age and sex served as control. Infected hamsters were divided into six main groups according to the number of infected cercariae (20, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 cercariae). Each group was sub-divided into 5 subgroups, according to the duration of infection after which animals were sacrificed (4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 weeks).

Emedastine difumarate (emedastine), an anti-allergic agent with anti-histaminic properties, was studied for its effect on human eosinophil chemotaxis induced by platelet activating factor (PAF). Peripheral blood eosinophils (98% purity) were obtained from healthy donors and chemotaxis assay were performed in microchemotaxis chambers. Emedastine showed a significant inhibitory effect on 10(-6) M PAF-induced eosinophil chemotaxis, in dose dependent fashion, at concentrations from 10(-6) to 10(-8) M.

Thirty Syrian golden hamsters were infected with Schistosoma mansoni and 10 were used as negative controls. Hamsters were infected by 100 cercariae; 15 were treated by praziquantel in doses of 100 mg/kg at 12, 13, 14 and 15 weeks postinfection, and 15 hamsters were left as positive control. Five from each subgroup were sacrificed at 24, 28 and 32 weeks after infection.

Substance P (SP) is a tachykinin involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes. To investigate a modulatory role of the neuropeptide SP in allergic inflammation, we studied its priming effect on human eosinophil chemotaxis and kinetic responses towards platelet activating factor (PAF) and recombinant human interleukin 5 (rhIL-5). Blood was obtained from normal subjects and eosinophils were separated by Percoll discontinuous density gradient centrifugation.

Immunization of mice against T. spiralis infection using T. spiralis larval glycoproteins as homogenous antigen and crude hydatid fluid as heterogenous antigen showed a marked reduction in larvae burden and a significant rise of serum IgE in immunized mice infected with T.

The relation between the level of serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE) percentage of T-lymphocyte and egg counts was studied in dogs infected with Ancylostoma duodenale. The serum IgG levels were significantly high and a marked significance was noticed also in the levels of IgM and IgE. An inverse relationship between the concentration of IgG and egg count and a direct association between the percentage of T-lymphocyte and IgG level was proved.

Generally speaking, with rapid international travel, it is very common to diagnose infectious diseases in areas where they were not known before. Nowadays, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is documented in Egypt mainly in Al Agamy, Alexandria. Another case of infantile visceral leishmaniasis was identified in an adult farmer (unusual host) in Banha.

In a population-based study in the Nile Delta of Egypt, the modified Kato thick smear technique was used to study the epidemiology of Schistosoma mansoni. After 2 years of implementation of the National Bilharzia Control Programme by the Ministry of Health, the general prevalence dropped from 47.2% to 21.

Studying of 72 pregnant women having congenital anomalies, stillbirth and repeated abortion of first and second trimesters showed Toxoplasma antibodies with high titre by IFAT and Dot-ELISA. Analysis of the results showed a positive correlation between IFAT and Dot-ELISA but not with IHAT. However, Dot-ELISA is simple, sensitive and specific.

In this work the impact of schistosomiasis on kidney transplantation was investigated by comparing two groups of patients, group 1 (Schistosoma-infected cases) and group 2 (control cases). In group 1, schistosomiasis was diagnosed in both donor and recipient in 63 cases, in recipient only in 65 cases, and in donor only in eight cases. Schistosomal infection among kidney transplant recipients was S.

The distribution of Toxocara canis larvae throughout the tissues of mice was studied in three groups of fourty mice each using three inocula sizes, (200/500 and 1000 eggs/mice). The results obtained revealed a significant interaction between the duration of infection, the inoculum size and the dispersal rate of larvae through the examined organs of experimented with mice.
