Background: The well-being of pharmacists is critical to support personal and professional health. Identifying and integrating a variety of practices that promote wellness is prudent for schools/colleges of pharmacy so students may form habits before entering the profession as practitioners. Yoga, a practice that combines muscular activity with mindfulness, can be incorporated with minimal resources via numerous mechanisms within and outside of the curriculum.

A Rare Case of Intracavitary Cardiac Metastasis of Endometrial Carcinosarcoma.

A 59-year-old female, with past medical history including endometrial carcinosarcoma with a port-a-cath device, presented due to shortness of breath. Transesophageal echocardiogram demonstrated a mass extending from the right atrium, involving the tricuspid valve, and extending into the right ventricle. Our differential diagnosis included thrombus as well as endocarditis and malignancy; a thrombus was considered to be the most likely etiology due to the port-a-cath device.

A Global, Cross-System Meta-Analysis of Polychlorinated Biphenyl Biomagnification.

Studies evaluating the mechanisms underpinning the biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a globally prevalent group of regulated persistent organic pollutants, commonly couple chemical and stable isotope analyses to identify bioaccumulation pathways. Due to analytical costs constraining the scope, sample size, and range of congeners analyzed, and variation in methodologies preventing cross-study syntheses, how PCBs biomagnify at food web, regional, and global scales remains uncertain. To overcome these constraints, we compiled diet (stable isotopes) data and lipid-normalized concentrations of sum total PCB (PCB), seven indicator PCB congeners, and their sum (PCB).

Automated data-intensive forecasting of plant phenology throughout the United States.

Phenology, the timing of cyclical and seasonal natural phenomena such as flowering and leaf out, is an integral part of ecological systems with impacts on human activities like environmental management, tourism, and agriculture. As a result, there are numerous potential applications for actionable predictions of when phenological events will occur. However, despite the availability of phenological data with large spatial, temporal, and taxonomic extents, and numerous phenology models, there have been no automated species-level forecasts of plant phenology.

Estimating flowering transition dates from status-based phenological observations: a test of methods.

The scale of phenological research has expanded due to the digitization of herbarium specimens and volunteer based contributions. These data are status-based, representing the presence or absence of a specific phenophase. Modelling the progress of plant dormancy to growth and reproduction and back to dormancy requires estimating the transition dates from these status-based observations.

A semester-long critical thinking course in the first semester of pharmacy school: Impact on critical thinking skills.

Introduction: To determine whether critical thinking improved after student-pharmacists participated in a semester-long critical thinking course in the first semester of pharmacy school.

Methods: Students took the Health Sciences Reasoning Test-Numeracy (HSRT-N) on the first and last day of the course. The overall HSRT-N score, percentile ranking, and eight sub-categories within the HSRT-N (analysis, interpretation, inference, evaluation, explanation, induction, deduction, and numeracy) were evaluated.

Comparison of large-scale citizen science data and long-term study data for phenology modeling.

Large-scale observational data from citizen science efforts are becoming increasingly common in ecology, and researchers often choose between these and data from intensive local-scale studies for their analyses. This choice has potential trade-offs related to spatial scale, observer variance, and interannual variability. Here we explored this issue with phenology by comparing models built using data from the large-scale, citizen science USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN) effort with models built using data from more intensive studies at Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites.

Pharmacist are able to provide management and intervention for the treatment of these disease states. This study examined outcomes 12 months prior to pharmacist intervention and 6 months postintervention.

Forecasting biodiversity in breeding birds using best practices.

Biodiversity forecasts are important for conservation, management, and evaluating how well current models characterize natural systems. While the number of forecasts for biodiversity is increasing, there is little information available on how well these forecasts work. Most biodiversity forecasts are not evaluated to determine how well they predict future diversity, fail to account for uncertainty, and do not use time-series data that captures the actual dynamics being studied.

Impact of rewilding, species introductions and climate change on the structure and function of the Yukon boreal forest ecosystem.

Community and ecosystem changes are happening in the pristine boreal forest ecosystem of the Yukon for 2 reasons. First, climate change is affecting the abiotic environment (temperature, rainfall and growing season) and driving changes in plant productivity and predator-prey interactions. Second, simultaneously change is occurring because of mammal species reintroductions and rewilding.

The theoretical underpinnings of Internet addiction and its association with psychopathology in adolescence.

This paper reviews the psychological and theoretical underpinnings that might help to explain the reported relationship between Internet addiction (IA) and psychopathology in both children and adolescents. Drawing on cognitive-behavioural models and social-skills theory, IA shows a strong relationship with depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and time spent using the Internet use. Mixed findings are reported for social anxiety.

Preceptor perceptions of fourth year student pharmacists' abilities regarding patient counseling on therapeutic lifestyle changes.

Objective: Advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) provide an opportunity for students to showcase health and wellness knowledge and skills attained during didactic education. The primary objective of this study was to assess preceptor perceptions of how well pharmacy year four (PY4) students are prepared to provide guideline-based and patient-specific therapeutic lifestyle change (TLC) counseling at onset of an APPE rotation. A secondary objective included assessment of differences in counseling abilities if the preceptor considered the student normal weight versus overweight or obese, or if they were a known smoker.

Several pathophysiologic hypotheses exist regarding this association, with the most widely reported a relationship to obesity and insulin resistance.

Background: Two-thirds of Americans who are prescribed antihypertensive medications are not at a blood pressure (BP) goal of <140/90 mmHg, and low adherence is identified as a primary cause of inadequate control. Improved adherence to antihypertensive medications has been shown to enhance BP control and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. This study investigated the effectiveness of a pill box clinic to improve BP in veterans with uncontrolled hypertension taking 3 or more antihypertensive medications.

Isolated medial cuneiform fracture: a special forces soldier with a rare injury.

Isolated cuneiform fractures rarely occur, but must be considered in the differential diagnosis for midfoot injuries. Along with other nondisplaced, nondislocated midfoot injuries, these fractures are commonly missed or delayed in diagnosis. A review of the literature reveals only three other reported cases of isolated medial cuneiform fractures.

Aqueous foam films stabilized by sodium naphthenates.

Stratification of a foam liquid film drawn from aqueous solutions of sodium naphthenate at relatively high concentration is likely due to a lamellar liquid crystal-like structure within the film. Film stratification, resulting in stepwise thinning, has been observed in foam films formed from systems containing either moderate to high concentrations of surfactant or in films formed from solutions containing solid particles. At moderate surfactant concentrations, film stratification is likely due to layers of ordered spherical micelles as postulated in Wasan and Nikolov's model of film stratification.

Disjoining pressure isotherms of water-in-bitumen emulsion films.

In the oil sands industry, undesirable water-in-oil emulsions are often formed during the bitumen recovery process where water is used to liberate bitumen from sand grains. Nearly all of the water is removed except for a small percentage (approximately 1 to 2%), which remains in the solvent-diluted bitumen as micrometer-sized droplets. Knowledge of the colloidal forces that stabilized these water droplets would help to increase our understanding of how these emulsions are stabilized.

An association between Emergency Medicine residencies and improved trauma patient outcome.

A study was done to compare trauma patient outcome at American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level l Trauma Centers with Emergency Medicine residency programs (EMRP+) to those without (EMRP-). Ten Level l Trauma Centers were reviewed from the ACS National Trauma Database (5 centers with and 5 without EM residency programs). Of 18,591 trauma patient records, 8679 were identified as EMRP-, and 9912 as EMRP+.
