Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) is a human-exclusive bacterial pathogen killing annually more than 500,000 patients, and no current licensed vaccine exists. Strep A bacteria are highly diverse, but all produce an essential, abundant, and conserved surface carbohydrate, the Group A Carbohydrate, which contains a rhamnose polysaccharide (RhaPS) backbone. RhaPS is a validated universal vaccine candidate in a glycoconjugate prepared by chemical conjugation of the native carbohydrate to a carrier protein.

Academic stress is one of the primary factors threatening university students' well-being and performance. Undergraduate students who are working towards applying to medical school, defined as being on the pre-medicine or "premed" pathway, are suspected to have higher academic stress compared to their peers who are not premed. However, what factors contribute to academic stress for premed students is not well understood.

Immune checkpoint inhibition unleashes the power of the immune system against tumour cells. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) block the inhibitory effects of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein 4, programmed death protein 1, programmed death ligand 1 and lymphocyte activation gene 3 molecules on T-cells, and so enhance physiological cytotoxic effects. ICIs can significantly improve survival from cancers, including those previously associated with poor treatment response, such as metastatic melanoma.

Personal and structural barriers to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care result in its underutilization and premature discontinuation. A home-based PrEP program comprised of telemedicine visits and/or self-administered lab testing may address some of these barriers. Our objective was to assess the acceptability and feasibility of a home-based PrEP program among stakeholders at an urban HIV and primary care clinic.

Background: Despite ongoing efforts to introduce evidence-based interventions (EBIs) into mental health care settings, little research has focused on the sustainability of EBIs in these settings. College campuses are a natural place to intervene with young adults who are at high risk for mental health disorders, including eating disorders. The current study tested the effect of three levels of implementation support on the sustainability of an evidence-based group eating disorder prevention program, the Body Project, delivered by peer educators.

The generation of distinct cell fates during development depends on asymmetric cell division of progenitor cells. In the central and peripheral nervous system of progenitor cells respectively called neuroblasts or sensory organ precursors use PAR polarity during mitosis to control cell fate determination in their daughter cells. How polarity and the cell cycle are coupled, and how the cell cycle machinery regulates PAR protein function and cell fate determination is poorly understood.

Classification-based myoelectric control has attracted significant interest in recent years, leading to prosthetic hands with advanced functionality, such as multi-grip hands. Thus far, high classification accuracies have been achieved by increasing the number of surface electromyography (sEMG) electrodes or adding other sensing mechanisms. While many prescribed myoelectric hands still adopt two-electrode sEMG systems, detailed studies on signal processing and classification performance are still lacking.

Aims: The MAPK pathway is constitutively activated in uveal melanoma (UM). Selumetinib (AZD6244, ARRY-142886), a MEK inhibitor, has shown limited activity as monotherapy in metastatic UM. Pre-clinical studies support synergistic cytotoxic activity for MEK inhibitors combined with taxanes, and here we sought to assess the clinical efficacy of combining selumetinib and paclitaxel.

Implementation support for prevention interventions is receiving increased attention, as many organizations receive training in evidence-based practices but do not deliver the interventions optimally. The Body Project, a four-session program, significantly reduces eating disorder symptoms and future disorder onset among group participants when delivered by peer educators at colleges/universities. Costs and cost-effectiveness of the program were examined using data from a randomized trial that compared three levels of implementation support at 63 colleges: (1) a train-the-trainer (TTT) workshop alone, (2) TTT plus a technical assistance (TA) workshop, or (3) TTT plus TA plus monthly quality assurance (QA) consultations.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are studying how the tiny living things in our gut (gut microbiome) can affect cancer treatment, specifically with a method called immune checkpoint blockade (ICB).
  • They looked at 175 patients with a type of skin cancer called melanoma to see how changes in the gut microbiome relate to how well the treatment works over time.
  • They found that certain types of gut bacteria can help predict if patients will do better or worse with the treatment, and understanding these changes can help doctors improve therapies in the future.

Purpose: Despite mounting evidence indicating that aquaporin-4 antibody-positive optic neuritis (AQP4-ON) presents a less favorable prognosis than other types of optic neuritis, there exists substantial heterogeneity in the prognostic outcomes within the AQP4-ON cohort. Considering the persistent debate over the role of MRI in assessing the prognosis of optic neuritis, we aim to investigate the correlation between the MRI appearance and long-term visual prognosis in AQP4-ON patients.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the ophthalmological and imaging data of AQP4-ON patients admitted to our Neuro-ophthalmology Department from January 2015 to March 2018, with consecutive follow-up visits for a minimum of 3 years.

Objectives: The post-medieval period in Europe saw a dramatic increase in metabolic bone disease related to vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Recent paleopathological work has utilized interglobular dentin (IGD) as a proxy for poor vitamin D status during development, while enamel peptide analysis allows the identification of chromosomal sex in non-adult remains. Here we explore the relationship between sex, the presence of IGD, and macroscopic markers of VDD in an industrial era assemblage from Northeast England.
